i dont think that my transmisson is blown...but if so what would be the signs of a blown tranny or a totally messed up cv axle?

It's easier for us to diagnose a problem if you give us the symptoms rather than us confirming or refuting what you believe to be the problem.

That said, a "blown tranny" can mean different symptoms...heavy vibration, sluggish acceleration, bad odor, inabiltiy/hesitation/hard shifting are most common. Could be as simple as needing a fluid replacement...

A bad CV joint usually shows up as a clicking noise when turned hard to the left or right. Related but not the same, a bad hub bearing will have a loud, low growl (like loud road noise, but pulsates with the rotation of the wheel).

If by "blown" you mean ready for a rebuild or new replacement it can mean it won't shift at all or into one or more gears. The classic sign is metal debrie in the tranny fluid pan.

A toasted outer CV joint will click in turns and the inner will produce a pronounced "clunk" as you accelerate and decelerate. You might feel a jerk. Torn CV joint boot covers are a sign of potential trouble and need to be replaced asap.

i was driving and my car would vibrate as i accelerated.....i knew that my driver side cv axle was about dead but i planned on fixing it two weeks later......as i am driving it is getting harder and harder to accel, and the vibrations as i accel get worse and worse over about a 70 mi distance.... i had been driving on it like this for a while, i knew my time was limited but i thought what the hell.. one more trip wont hurt....wrong, i came to a red light and my car wouldnt not budge...to get it to move i had to punch it almost redlining to get it to move......i guess my real question is can a bad, i mean very bad, cv axle ruin a tranny...oh and it is a 1990 camry

The short answer is yes. Waiting to change an obviously bad CV joint puts alot of extra stress on the driveline. Whether you've actually toasted it yet I can't say. Here is what I believe...

The failing CV joint is causing binding in that wheel, resulting in the vibration. The CV joint and vibration was also damaging the hub and bearings, slowly making it harder and harder for that wheel to turn. To compensate, you have to depress the pedal more.

To accelerate from a stop, the transmission relies on the torque converter, a device that uses fluid pressure against spinning vanes instead of a direct connection, to apply power to the drive axles. But only one is willing to move easily. The other, driver's side, has seized up. This places strain on the torque converter, heats up the transmission fluid, and strains the differential.

I would suggest a hub and CV joint replacement. Drain and check both differential and transmission fluids (flush if possible) for solids. If there is significant debris in either (they are drained separately), then you've successfully whacked your diff or tranny. Hope this helps.
