GM has extended the warranty for this particular problem. You may want to take it to the dealer. I paid 400.00 at the dealer to get mine fixed.

I just bought a new one... I got one from an Escalade... I think they only extended the warrenty to 70,000 miles

Speed sensors on the wheels and transmission send the info to the PCM which operates the stepper motors on the cluster

THE SERVICE PROCEDURE IN THIS BULLETIN HAS BEEN REVISED. IN A SMALL NUMBER OF VEHICLES, THE GAUGE SWEEP TEST MAY NOT ALWAYS CONFIRM THE CONDITION. PLEASE REVIEW THE SERVICE PROCEDURE IMMEDIATELY.
DUE TO PART AVAILABILITY, THIS SPECIAL COVERAGE IS BEING ADMINISTERED IN PHASES. YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED AS EACH ADDITIONAL PHASE IS RELEASED.

Condition

(http://service.gm.com/servlets/BlobShtml?ShtmlFile=2037454&psdid=297&evc=sm#ss1-2037454)Some customers of 2003-2004 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles have reported that one or more of the instrument panel (IP) cluster gauges stick, flutter, or become inoperative. This may cause inaccurate readings, including the speedometer and fuel gauge.
Special Coverage Adjustment

(http://service.gm.com/servlets/BlobShtml?ShtmlFile=2037454&psdid=297&evc=sm#ss2-2037454)This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 7 years or 70,000 miles (110,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.
Dealers are to replace the instrument panel cluster after the condition has been verified. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.
For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after September 28, 2007 are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. holy smokes! So I found a sensor on this website. http://www.discountbowtieparts.com/CV_Speedometer~Sensor_list.html

So were is that thing located?

The problem is not actually with the speed sensing devices, it's with the stepper motors within the cluster. There's only two ways I know of to fix this problem, one being getting a replacement cluster and the second being tearing down the cluster and changing out the stepper motors. I had this problem, like many others, and I bought a new replacement off ebay about a year before this damn extended warranty thing came in the mail, cost me about 210.00 shipped

good luck . long story short I have an 03 2500hd was documented speedo problems under warranty, and still have the work orders, and sent them copies. have a 03 1500 z71 documented problems starting at 16,000 miles and have all paper work. I replaced the 2500hds and got the letters both were refused. I also work for GM from what I here from friends with these trucks and people I work with GM is refusing 90% not honoring.

Yeah you got that right..I had all my work orders and documented repairs for my cluster and of course they refused, something about "not being a approved location for repairs" and a couple of friends of mine had repairs done and they were all refused as well..so I believe ya when u say 90% are being refused..bunch of crap but oh well

I have had the same problem with my cluster. The speedometer and the tach would work sometimes and sometimes not. I ordered stepper motors off ebay and replaced them myself. Not a bad job but they are soldered in. If you have some bulbs burned out in the cluster it will be a good time to replace them also. Oh yea GM also had these bulbs soldered in. You can find the stepper motors on ebay for about $10 each or even get an exchanged cluster with updated stepper motors for around $200. Hope this helps. GOOD PRODUCT FROM GM???

SI have soldering experience is that good enough experience to have to replace the stepper motors? Also the alternative to this is having my truck down for days having someone on eBay fix my stuff....is that correct?

I don't have a lot of experance in soldering either. Just desolder the original stepper motor and solder the new one in. When you buy the stepper motors off ebay they should give you instructions. Removing the cluster will not disable your truck. I did mine over the weekend but also drove the truck without the cluster installed. I added white faces while i was at it. The odometer will still keep your mileage correct. If you need any more info i'll be glad to answer any questions you might have. Hope this helps.

what about just buying the shabang on ebay? then sending the old stuff back. Do these people on ebay do it right? anyone had any problems with anyone on there or recommend anyone I have only bought the stepper motors and light bulbs off ebay. They also advertise complete repaired clusters with new style stepper motors exhanged.
Check their FEEDBACK remarks and good luck. I have had good luck with them so far.

Not a problem. If you change your own stepper motors the cluster
resets itself when you turn the ignition on. My speedometer is still right on spot when i drive by these speed checkers that the police park along side the road to show if you are speeding. Just follow the instructions that come with the stepper motors. They are pretty detailed.
If you changed to a different cluster you will probably will have to get it reprogramed but i am not sure about that. Maybe someone else will chime in on that one. You can also ask the seller thay will know what needs to be done.

I just asked my dealer about this on my '03 Yukon XL with 103,000 miles. They said they could get the cluster covered under warranty, but I would have to pay for the labor (approx. $100-150).

Sounds good
I would go for it.
If they do the labor you should have some extended warranty on the replacement or repaired cluster.

I also had a speedometer problem in my 2004 Chevrolet Silverado
the speedometer was not working at all and I found a website where I had it fixed. They charged me $140 to replace all the 7 motors inside the cluster That was a lot cheaper than the $700 that the dealer wanted to replace the instrument panel.

Here is the website

Seem'ss there are alot of these bad instrument clusters. Had the same issue on my 04 Silverado. dealer wanted 400+ bucks to fix it. My uncle owns 2 small dealerships and took both the silverados on his lot to a guy near us. he charged him and i both 125 each. you can send them to him and he repairs them the same day and has it back in the mail via USPS priority mail! not a bad deal compared to what others are charging. All 3 of the trucks haven'had a problem since!
