Porsche 962C research

I've stumbled across this excellent site in my search for info on the Porsche 962 - I am about to start building the new Revell 1/24 Rothmans 962C as the 1987 Le-Mans version and I'm intending to improve the cockpit a little, however I'm finding a suprising lack of info out there , was there an additional seat or was there various bits of equipment and fire extinguishers etc there instead ? also was the floor of the cockpit in bare metal or carbon fibre ?

Also I've purchased the 'Museum Collection' Rothmans decals for this project, but they seem like the wrong shade of blue

I can't help you with your specific questions but there are some terrific guys here who know tons of stuff and I am sure will be happy to share it.

Also try searching out some of the WIPs in the Motorsport sub-forum - I am sure you will find some stuff there also.

I believe that the rules for Group C (like the current LMP1 regs) were that the cars had to be capable of carrying a passenger in an additional seat. So a seat certainly could be fitted, and it was likely at some time before or after the race it was. However during the race the seat was not required, so it wasn't carried. Likely, you'd see fire suppression equipment, engine management electronics, or a bank of fuel pumps revealed by the seats absence (I seem to remember that the fuel pumps there on the 956 were rather prominent).

You're probably going to struggle to find good pics of the specific car you're building. Porsche alone entered three different 962's in Rothman's livery in '87 (plus a 961 for good measure!) of the ten or so 962s that ran that year. But there are alot of decent pics of 962s and 956s in LM or IMSA trim the web. You may have to combine what you can find to to a 'generic' 962, but likely you won't be far off from the actual car. The 956/962 used a metal chassis, so a bare metal finish would be appropriate.

Hi Skii, and welcome to AF!

First up I'll have to disappoint you a bit! The Revell kit will not let you build the '87 LeMans winner ( or any LeMans 962 for that matter ). The kit represents a so called "short tail" car which was used at sprint races. The rear wing of the Le Mans cars was a good deal lower and the bodywork beneath longer for running high speeds on the very long Mulsanne straight. The Tamiya 956 kit has that configuration.
I'm not getting into more details now because 956/962s are a science of their own:-) Instead here are some links to get you started with information:

Finally....the floor of your cockpit should be aluminium. The 962 chassis were not in carbon fibre ( with a few exceptions :-)

This is a shot of cockpit 962-101, the first customer IMSA 962:

Note this is with the seat removed. Chris Dyson did a back to back test at Sebrig in November, 962-101 vs. the RS Spyder, for an article I'm writing for Excellence magazine. This was Chris' first time in 101 and so they had to do some adjustments to the seating arrangement in order to make him comfortable.

Couple of things to note per your post; fire extinguishers, aluminum floor, and the center spar has weight reduction holes in it.

The Museum Collection decals do look a little light however the Revell decals could also be a bit dark too. Is this for a group build? If so can you point me to where? As jaykay640 stated a Le Mans car can't easily be built from this kit as it has high down force front and rear bodywork and a LM spec car would have low drag front and rear bodywork. Good luck,
