Are new wheel bearings necessary when installing new axles?

I finally have a set of new axles ready to install on my '93 E since I'm really annoyed of the clicking I get on right turns. However, now my mechanic tells me that it would be better if I install new bearings as well. He says its kinda like installing a new water pump when doing timing belts on cars............highly recommended.

My bearings don't squeal at this point (70K) and only my left axle is bad but I said what the heck and decided to order both axles. Should I also get new bearings?

not totally necessary but if its never been done you might consider it. not exactly like wp while doing a timing belt because the water pump replacement adds usually very little labor cost to a timing belt job. with wheel bearings you do have to tear into the hub a bit farther than just doing an axle, i would say ask your mechanic what the labor if you did it with the axle, then ask how much it would be if you did it later by itself, then compare the prices.
