How to you remove the rear strut springs?

I need to remove the rear strut pistons that hold up the rear hatch. I am getting a lot of rust behind the brackets. There seams to be a lot of pressure there. It's January in NH and I need to fix it ASAP or it will be real bad by spring. Any help would be great. Thanks everyone . :iceslolan

There's like a horse shoe shaped clip you pry off with a flathead.
