My ford contour makes a loudn grinding noise when it starts.. I had a friend of mine turn it on and I was listening and it comes from the starter.. It only happens when the car is cold.. Any suggestion of what it could be??:runaround:

Sound like the solonoid is not retracting the gear or the gear isn't going out enough and it is causing the teeth to grind because they aren't making a solid connection. I would look into replacing the starter.

I would do it now. It is a fairly easy part to replace and not very expensive. Any time you get a grinding noise 99% of the time there is damage being done. IMO I would not wait.
