I'm trying to reinstall a fuel pump assembly unit back into the fuel tank. There is a 1 inch high plastic ring that is suppose to fit down into the tank that I am having a He@@ of a time getting it back in there. Is there a trick to getting this plastic ring back into the tank so I can put the retainer ring back on?

Is the ring not fitting inside the tank like it's too big? IIRC the ring should just sit around the lip of the opening and the pump sits inside that. When I replaced my pump the only problem I had was getting the retaining ring back on, but had no problem after I bought a big-ass pair of pliers.

Try to describe the problem a little more and we'll try to help.

The first picture in the link below shows a fuel pump assembly thats similar to mine. In the picture, there are arrows to describe certain items on the pump. Right above the word SPRINGS and below the top of the pump assembly, there is a plastic circular ring that fits inside the tank. Thats the part I'm having trouble with. It seems like it is a hair too big. But this is the same pump that came out of the tank......so it can't be. :banghead:

I definitly remember installing that when I did mine, don't remember having a problem with it fitting. Maybe if it is just a hair too big you can use some "coersion" to make it fit (gently tap it in place with a hammer?). Or if it's just not going to fit you could trim/file the hole out a bit, just make sure not to get any junk in the tank. Sorry, that's all I can think of. Good luck!

Have you tried twisting the ring, there may be an area that is supposed to "fit into slot A" so to speak. I think with mine (been about 2 years since I did it) there was one small area that HAD to fit exactly with a small indented "slot". That is the only thing I can come up with - otherwise, I am at a loss as well.

there is only one way to put it in right, try turning it,they have to sit so that the pump is in the deepest part of the tan. every one I have ever done had like raerae1 says slots to fit into.
