Multi-function switch

I own a '98 4-door Blazer LS with 40K. I recently purchased the vehicle from a deceased uncle. Last week the audible sound made by engaging the turn signal/hazzard switch remains constantly on. I took the vehicle to a local Chevy service shop and they said the multi-function switch needed to be replaced. I was told that to install a new switch, they would have to enter through the steering column. The cost of replacement is close to $300. I called around to other Chevy dealerships and the cost is fairly consistent.
It this a common problem with the Blazer? Does the cost of service seem excessive. Please advise. Thanks.

I assume they are charging you 200 for the part and 100 for the labor. This is about right. 98 was the first year they made the washer, dimmer, turnsignal and hazard switch all one piece for the blazers. These switches have gone through about four design changes since they were built. Shop around online for the switch, as for the labor you will be better off letting them put the switch in.

Sounds about right on the price but you may want to check with your local dealer first to see if it has any recalls. There was one for the hazard
portion of this switch.

98 was? i had one on my 95 and 96 Sonomas, and my 96 and 97 S and i know the interior was the same across brands. Im pretty sure the blazers had the same switches the S's had

well anyway, i snapped off the hazard switch in my 96 GMC and i was told the cost was going to be $1500. thank god the prices have come down.
luckily, mine was fixed by the dealership (i had an awesome service manager, thanks Leon!) but it made me very wary of those things in the future.
