It's a project I began 3 months ago, just to change of all the bodywork and lowering I've recently done. I wanted to do something "Vintage".

I took all informations on the Td's site and prepare my own plans. It will be 1/24 scale.

Scratchbuilding of the front wheels, I used a wheel from an 1/48 plane.
The chassis is now painted and have received a "dry-brush" of metalic color ( Humbrol 56 ).

I had problems with the glue (superglue gel) and my sheet of aluminium was disformed. I had then to glue another one on the first but with liquid superglue now.
The side window is now finished and glued, as well for the door and it's window.

That's where I am for now. My next step will be the curved rear door and finishing the wheel arches.

That's excellent, very well built.

You should make out your own 1/24 plans to sell. I'm sure they will be a hit with modelers into classic american cars.

These thin sheets of aluminium are used for offset printing. I didn't bought it , a member of my Modeling Club gave it to me. I don't know where you could buy some in Belgium, sorry.

When the TD is finished, I'll prepare a .pdf tutorial like you did for the intercooler. It will be downloadable from my Modeling Club website.
But the site is not yet begun, I'm better in modeling than in webpages building.

This project takes all my time of club meetings then be patient the end is near, more progress pics soon.

The trailer+car is just begging to be put into a diorama.

You're right Focus2000, the TD+VW will be on a diorama. The theme will be the side of a Californian road, with Mr and Mrs having a break.

I have lots of stuff to prepare for this Diorama:
- open the right door of the Beetle
- on the roof support: Coca-Cola cool box, Empi-parts box.
- behind the trailer: camping table and chairs, bread , bootles, glasses and the twoo figures.

Won't be finished for march, I have a great contest in Belgium in March in Jabbeke (Gent) called "On the road" ( for the belgian and dutch modellers) and I think I'll put it in the "Scratch category" not yet in the "Diorama category".

I know that I'm a slow modeler but here is the latest progress.

I stopped working on the trailer, I have problems to realise the rear door and my motivation needs to be reoriented on a CAR.
So, I've begun the 1967 Hasegawa Beetle.

About comparison: I have the two kits at home, I sincerely prefer the Tamiya one but when I began on it I had'nt bought it yet.
Tamiya: opening trunk, engine, better interior details (dashboard, ...),...
BUT
Hasegawa is more accurate on the general shape of the car, Tamiya looks more like a 1303.

I do prefer this project a thousand times over the Golf, but I love the golf...

Agreed. But 1 question deeelit. The way you installed the kitchen, if the people are in the trailer, how will they have access to the kitchen if its mounted facing the rear?

To Camber: I use Tamiya White fine primer. It works great.

To 454SS: I know , it's a strange way to instal a kitchen. 95% of the teardrops trailer are done this way. I followed the pics of a real one.

I've worked a bit recently. During my latest show I was so bored that I decided to paint the 'white' parts of my seats and door panels. I used oil paints (winsor&newton) , mixed two or three different colours to have a kind of beige.
It took me 6 hours to achieve. After lights and shadows, here is how it looks now:

Last w-e I was in a show so I had a lot of time to spend. So I painted all the blue parts of the seats and doorpanels.

I made step-by-step pics to explain on another forum my technique of oil paints. I always paint my interiors with oil paints , like Winsor&Newton, to give it a used or leather look.
I'll also explain you. :-)

1° Preparing the parts
----------------------
I've put all the parts on handles to easily hold them. The panels are visible in the previous pics, they were held on a card with bluetac.

2° Preparing the paint-mix
-------------------------
With oil paints, more you mix paints more your paint will be mat :screwy: (hoop you understand).
Here are the 4 colours I used.

And here is the mix I did. I added just a small part of red and 'crimson' to keep my colour blue.

3° Painting the first coat
-------------------------
With a soft brush, paint all the primered parts. The part MUST be painted with a coloured mat coat first. This first coat will 'hold' the oil on the parts. Here, all my parts were primered with Valejo acrylics (airbrushed).

There are still some brushmarks in the paint, but don't worry, those will be removed in the next steps.

Let the parts to 'dry' for +/- 20 minutes. This delay will help the oil to 'attach' the base coat.

4° Removing the excess paint
----------------------------
With another large/flat/soft brush, carefully pass it on the fresh paint. Each time, wipe your brush on paper to remove the paint from your brush. Repeat this operation as long as the paint is not clean. The base coat will also appear through your oil paint.

5° Lights
---------
Take a new soft/large/flat/clean ( :screwy: :evillol: ) brush , take some white oil paint with this brush and wipe it on paper. Like if you did a drybrush. Remove all the paint from your brush, even if you think there is no more paint in it there is always enough to make your drybrush.

Slowly pass this brush on all the edges, perpendiculary to the parts to avoid putting white in the hollows. The blue is still 'fresh' so the white will mix with the blue and lighten the edges.

6° Shadows
-----------
Mix some black oil with your paint. Take a fine brush and put some dark mix in the hollows. Take a flat brush and 'push' the dark in the hollow. It will automatically mix the dark with the blue.

Thats all for the basic steps. I hope you're not too bored. :biggrin:

The oil paint takes 3 days to dry so you can still make lights and shadows the day after.

Now, I only have to paint the fine line of the seats with white, and put some BMf on the panels accesories. And the interior will be finished.

I also bought some accesories during this show.
Some hinges, basicaly for RC boats but they will be placed on my beetle's door.

I never really liked VW. Thats just me. I personally think Subaru is better, but there are a lot of people that would argue that. My favorite car company is Barvarian Motor Works (BMW). Thats just me. Someone else's favorite car may be the Volkswagon Bettle. I'm not knocking VW, just voicingmy opinion.

I agree....looks real good deedlit. But I do have a slight question for you. Why a beetle and not the VW van, or something like that?

In a van you can sleep in it and not in a beetle (you can do it but it won't be very comfortable).

One of the projects that really deserves a long time build!!!
The scratchbuild trailer is out of this world wit quality better than if it was an original kit...

As for the oil paints 'trick' reminds me back in the dieacst days that I used same water based mixed paints over the original paint to get a great/mat/worn leather look it's almost the same thing but oil paints mix better and are far more 'durable'

Just one small question...the hinges can be bought from a store online???

I passed some compound and polish (both Tamiya) on the passenger door and also chromed the parts with BMF.

I had painted the body with arctic white (automotive paint) and after masking the sides I painted the body baby blue (automotive paints too).
I have already begun the compound and polish stage but I have still lots of areas to do.
I have all the chrome parts to do with BMf and also have to apply black chrome BMF on the arches joints.

You have certainly seen my thread on flat4ever.com and it's very appreciated there.
Flat4ever and Af are my favorite forums, I like to share my work with other people to hear their advices, comments or critics. Also during shows, master modelers from other clubs come to see my work and I'm kissing their feet when they say they like it. For me it's not so beatiful, I have probably another look at my work.
It's my first scratch model, so there are probably some mistakes but next one will be better.
All I need now to finish this project is a bit of time and a lot of motivation and courage because I'm in a kind of modeling block and haven't touched a brush for 3 months.

1°) Evergreen products can be found in your local hobby shop or on every good web-shop like hlj.com , towerhobbies.com, ...

2°) When I began the chassis, I took all the pics I found on the net and did sketches and drawings on my computer. I printed it at 1/24 scale and only had to take the mesurements to cut my plastic profiles. Here is what I used to make the chassis:

No, unfortunately no progress for the moment.

If you follow my sig, you have probably seen that it's now 'Back soon' and no more 'On hold'.
In fact, I've closed my modeling club. We had lots of problems in the club and then I lost my motivation (too many reasons to explain to you). I was president since it's foundation, so it pissed me off to close but .... that's life
Now I've found a new club where I'll join next week (www.lesdinguesdukit.be.tf) . I'll only be a member so no responsabilities. I will only be responsible for the colour of my car.
Now that I've found them, motivation comes back and I hope I'll finish it soon. I feel now a new excitation to work on my models.

Hi all,

after all the latest events (birth of our first child, the house we bought, my club I closed,...) I had no more time to work on my projects. Now that everything is slowly coming back to normal, motivations come back and I can find some hours to work on.

So, here is the latest progress.

The interior is 99.9% finished. I've painted the thin border around the seats in white (in french we say: 'le passe-poil', I don't know the english word for this). The seats are glued on the chassis.

I must still add a PE road book with reduced maps in it, place the vase on the dashboard and find a very small (real) flower to go in this vase.

I've done the compound stage on the body but I did it too much and went through the paint to the primer. I must now completely sand it and repaint it.

About the chassis of the caravan, I had replaced the bolts done with stretched sprue by PE bolts, a lot more beautiful. I have repainted the frame in black (aluminium looked too 'toyish') and have already done a drybrush with Enamel. I have still another drybrush to do with silver powder. It will highlight the details a little more.

So, I had a lot of time to work on my models, full days of work like a slave, my projects are allmost finished.

Yes, just kidding, in 3 weeks I only found 3 hours to work on my models. So, here is what I did during these 3 hours.

I completely sanded the blue on the beetle. I worked in another way this time, I used the colour from the spray and took it to airbrush. The result is then mat. I'll now put the BMF on the details and after that, clearcoat everything to seel the whole thing.

I drilled and painted the vase, I also put the BMF on the holding support. I found the smallest real flower possible, a flower from Gypsophile, and put it in the vase. It's now glued on the dashboard.

I painted my PE Road Atlas, I inserted some thin white paper (cigaret rolling paper) and a reduced map (from a 1/35 set) . The map is almost out to represent as it was ready to use.

Sorry if I didn't thank you earlier but I've been very busy at work.

I worked a bit on both models recently:

- BMF 99% done on the Beetle (what a pain in the ass to do the boardwalks)
- joints between the fenders and the body painted black

There are still some little parts to do with BMF and I can clearcoat. All those chromes are so annoying so I left it on the side and concentrate back on the caravan.

On this one, I did the frame for the backdoor with Evergreen profiles and plastic sheets. Now this frame will be painted wood color and then, I can glue the aluminium sheet and fix it on the hinge.

Unfortunately I have no pics to show but I hope to present some next week.

Caravan:
I did all the frame for the back door.
For the sides, I used a 2mm sheet and then sanded, and sanded, and sanded to give the right shape. The strengthening parts at the top and bottom are done with 'L' Evergreen profiles (4mm sides) and in the middle I used a flat profile (4mm wide too).

Here I mounted it closed. Just to show you that it's the same shape as the sides but, at the end, it will be glued on the hinge.

I also did the closing system. Litlle pearls will be put in the corners (where I bended the wire) to represent 'knee joints'.

I also prepared some accesories:
- 2 little jacks done with electrical wire. I only removed the half of the pastic. Those jacks will be mounted at the top of the frame. I must still drill the holes in the frame to place them
- the handle (from a Tamiya Beetle) who will set the closing system in action
- a PE keyholder for the Beetle's starter. I'll glue it at the very end, so I won't lose it when I manipulate the car.

So, all the frame must now be painted 'wood' color, then I can glue the aluminium sheet outside and the 'wood' paper inside. And finally, I'll glue the license plate and place a wire for the plate lighter.

Beetle:
BMF is 90% done, I still have the windscreen trim, driver's boardwalk and some little grills at the front to do.
Just some touch up here and there with blue, and I can clear coat everything and add the last elements and details.
