'97 No start in rain/wet weatherCLR01 12-11-2007, 08:07 PM Let me first start out by saying that you to Blazee and everyone else who contributed to the thread on water pump replacement. Thanks to that how-to I saved some money doing it myself. Ok, so I guess this is the right forum. So, '97 blazer, 4.3, W and I have been having trouble with the truck not starting when there is excessive moisture in the air. It starts fine when it is dry. Unfortunately, it has been raining here for the last 6 days and there is so much moisture floating around it seems as if the rain or mist is suspended in the air and we have at least one more day before it clears up for a day or two. The engine cranks it just won't fire. I tried jumping it so see if the battery may have been bad but that didn't help, I cleaned the wires and the terminal going to the battery and dried them off and still no luck. Does anyone having any ideas before I sen it off to the shop old_master 12-11-2007, 08:12 PM Sounds like distributor cap, rotor, and/or spark plug wires. AC Delco is the preferred brand on the 4.3L engine. muzzy1maniac 12-12-2007, 09:30 AM Wait till dark and have someone turn the engine over. Watch for arching around the cap and plug wires. DINO55 12-12-2007, 10:18 AM I Concur With Old Master And Muzzy........ CLR01 12-13-2007, 04:25 AM Thanks guys. I changed the cap and rotor and it fired right up, a little rough but it started. The contact points on the cap were in rough shape. I am kind of surprised it was starting at all. I noticed a lot of white smoke coming out of he exhaust at first, would that be just excess gas getting burned off? old_master 12-13-2007, 05:11 PM When replacing the cap and rotor, a small amount of silicone dielectric is applied to each contact. When the engine is running, the electrical current crystalizes the dielectric and gives it the appearance of corrosion, (white crusty residue). The white smoke might have been excess fuel or moisture in the exhaust system. Keep an eye on it, if it continues, post back and we'll see if we can diagnose it. You might want to check fuel pressure and leakdown just to be sure that's not a problem. Fuel pressure is critical on these engines. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
