Every filter or packaging has the tightening instructions on them.

Cant speak for the tranny filter, but for the oil filter I just hand tighten. Never had a problem, and makes it easier to remove.

i have always wiped oil on the seal of filter with finger and then hand tighten it, and i have never had any problems. i can always removed it by hand too.

I put a little oil on rubber gasket fill filter with oil, screw on filter till it just touches block then rotate 3/4-1 turn cw. this has never failed. if you can't get oil filter off new vehicle 1st oil change, put an adhesive sand disk on filter then use strap wrench on that sand paper surface no slipping. I would think if you installed an in line trans filter that the same would apply...

NEVER use pliers or even a socket to tighten an oil filter. I spin the filter on until the ring is just touching all the way around (oil the ring, as was said), then turn about another 1/2-3/4 turn. I have done thousands of oil changes and have never had a problem keeping them that loose.
