"Clunk" noise?

I have searched the archives... found a few references to "clunk" noise, but they were two years old and there was no answer posted.
So this is my version of the question...

When I turn a corner, I hear what I can only describe as a "clunk". Sometimes two or three, depending on how fast I'm making the corner.

Sounds like it's coming from between the cab and bed, underneath.
I thought it might be something I have in the bed of my truck, but it does it when the bed is empty.

Any ideas what it could be? How to fix it?

Thank you.

alot of times it is a simple matter of tightening the cross member that is underneath the oil pan .

some times it is the shackles for the rear leaf springs ,the rubber isolating bushing are defective. replacement is the order of the day in this case.

Make sure the exhaust is tight. If it has lost a strap it can shift and clunk. (seems kind of obvious but....)

Thanks RaeRae,
It's a '93 Nissan Hardbody. 2.4 5-spd. (used for commuting and light hauling-IE: Musical gear, flea-market, camping gear, hardware store/lumber yard)
Not a broken exhaust strap...good thought though.
I'll get a chance to put it up on stands and crawl under over the Holidays... I'll be looking at everything then. I'll post what I find... or don't find?
Merry Christmas!

Have fun with that! Not a horrible way to spend the holiday. As long as crawling under doesn't end up elbow deep in grease

if your truck is 2 wheel drive then it might be a faulty outboard cv joint.

Crawl underneath the front of this vehicle (the side where
the clicking noise is coming from) and inspect the outboard
CV Joint boot (the boot is the rubber, ribbed "thing" which
contains the CV Joint). Refer to a repair manual covering
this vehicle if you aren't sure what you're looking for. If the
boot is torn in any way, this means that road dirt/grime has
ruined the joint and thus is causing the joint to make a
clicking noise during turns. In this case, you'll need to have
the CV Joint replaced.
However, even if the boot isn't torn, this does not mean that
the CV Joint inside the boot is OK - more than likely there's
still something wrong with it (since you are hearing, what is
called by mechanics, the "CV Joint click"). In any case,
take this vehicle to a garage and ask the mechanic to find
out exactly what is causing the clicking noise.

hope this helps

2wd trucks do not have constant velocity joints
