1999 GMC Jimmy - 4x4 help needed!!lester_26 12-09-2007, 08:36 PM My 4x4 does not work properly. If I start the vehicle, I stand a 25% chance of when I hit 4x4 it will go into 4x4 mode. Once in 4x4 mode it will run, however, after a while (especially if I stop then continue) I get periodic clunking coming from under the engine. Once in 4x4, it's hard to get out of 4x4. Usually requires a stop and several pushes of the button. I have to stop cuz if I don't, I will eventually get a grinding noise. The same applies (grinding and a stop) if I'm in 2wd and try pushing the button several times for 4x4. When the button is pressed, the light will blink a couple times, you can hear a double clicking noise then it reverts back to the mode it was in. Only other issues is the turn signal (which I read up on here and will clean) and no heat. I read about replacing the module, but at no point does all 3 lights come on at the same time. Any help gratefully appreciated. LESTER DelCoch 12-10-2007, 12:28 AM Let's tackle one problem per post and handle the 4x4 problem here. I suggest starting a new post for the other issues. For the 4x4 problem; Check out the u-joints on the front drive shaft, and the bearings on each end of the frt driveshaft. Check the frt axle shafts, frt wheel bearings and check the engine and transmission mounts. Plus, check the transfer case fluid level. Has the transfer case fluid been changed lately? Are all 4-tires the same brand name, the same size, the same tread design, and with the same amount of wear on each one? How miles on vehicle? How long have you owned it? Do you know if it has ever had any work done on transmission, transfer case, frt axles, etc, etc? Is it a 3-button or 4-button control for the 4x4? Do you know what transfer case you have - 233 or 236? Let use know what you find and some of the experts can jump in here. lester_26 12-10-2007, 10:48 PM Sorry, that was my intent of 1 problem at a time... I'm inept at checking the front end, so will solicit help from a neighbour and/or mechanic, unless you have some quick/easy guidelines. I have never changed out the transfer case fluid.... 115k miles on it. I've owned it since 30k miles. No work done on tranny (except flush), transfer case. Only had the ball joints replaced, but problem started before this change out. I am in need of new tires too. They are wearing evenly, but down to 3/32 tread. 3 button for the 4x4 and I don't know what transfer case I have...how can I tell. Thanks again for your help...and sorry for my lack of information. DelCoch 12-11-2007, 12:52 AM It sounds like your 4x4 is not fully engaging, thus the grinding noise. I would start with checking the vacuum hoses for breaks and/or tears at the connectors, especially under the battery tray and on the transfer case. Look on the rear of the transfer case to see if it says 233 or 236. Check this Tread (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=572914) it will give you an idea of how the 4x4 works. Then do a search in this forum for "4x4", that should give you an idea of what to look for. lester_26 12-11-2007, 08:23 PM Thanks again for the post! Very helpful. Again, for my quick question (so I don't screw things up like I usually do). 1. I believe I see the valve below the battery tray, thus I need to remove the battery and tray. That being said, is there only two bolts holding the battery and tray on? 2. I will change out the valve, but how do you check hoses other than visual? LESTER DelCoch 12-12-2007, 06:39 AM I don't know how many bolts hold the battery tray on. You will be able to see them once you get the battery out. Visual and by feeling is the only way to check the hoses, unless you hear them leaking. Just pull one end off at a time and look at the end. On the end is where they usually split and leak. Sometimes they will disintegrate on the inside at the ends and get blocked. old_master 12-12-2007, 06:06 PM Slow to disengage and grinding could very well be the encoder motor operating slow, poor connection or just badly worn. lester_26 12-12-2007, 09:24 PM Slow to disengage and grinding could very well be the encoder motor operating slow, poor connection or just badly worn. Where is the encoder motor and any idea on how much it costs? old_master 12-12-2007, 09:34 PM Driver side, toward top front of the transfer case. As far as price, you'll have to check around at local parts stores and the dealer. The encoder is very easy to replace, if that's the problem. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
