Thermostat opening temp

I just bought a thermostat for my '93 Nissan Sentra 1.6L. The thermostat is marked as opening at 180 degrees, but the FSM for the car lists it at 170. Should I look around for a 170, or will the 180 work?

Go ahead and put the 180 stat in. It's probably better than a 170, especially in winter.

Almost every modern EFI car I have ever heard of requires a 195 degree thermostat.

For all these cars, a 180 stat is not quite hot enough, and will affect the performance of the car. The ECM is programmed to work best with 195+ temps because that is where emissions are lowest.

This Nissan is a bit strange because it specifies 170 or 180 deg stats. Given the choice, I would much prefer the 180 stat, for the reasons stated above, This is most important in winter time.
