Hi there.
Is it a petrol or diesel engine?.
How long does it run before it cuts out ? and how long do you have to wait before you can start it again.

its a petrol motor, travel time to cut out varies, but it takes at least half an hour before it starts again, thanks RICH

Could be various things. Fuel starvation is one possibility. does the van have fuel injection or a carburetor. The other possibility is a broken wire or bad electrical connection somewhere in the engine bay or around the fuel pump if it has injection. This is just a thought and worth getting checked out by a VW specialist, who would have all the necessary equipment to check this out.

Sounds a little like the classic vanagon syndrome which I think had something to do with the mass air flow sensor signal. I am not sure if this is appropriate but check out the vanagon forum at thesamba.com. They will have all the VW answers you need.

Edit: I guess if its a 97 then its not vanagon syndrome.
