7'11" Mclaren F1 Mika Hakkinen

-----

Another 'source' claims it was the XPLM.

Or better yet, know if there was anyone recording?

Now that I would really like to see.

Nope - news to me. Before I clicked on the weblink I originally thought it may have been the Formula 1 car, then I looked at the rest of the cars on the list and realised they were all road cars.

I doubt very much that it was XP1LM, more than likely XP5 as that's what he drove on that (in)famous video of 'hearing the turbos whistle' (?). Is it really 17s quicker than a CGT in the Porsche-god Walter Rohrls hands?

I do agree though, I'd pay good money to see it on video if it was an F1.

Well, I don't think it's valid.

If Hakkinen had taken an F1 around the 'Ring in that amount of time it would have been widely publicized. Also the track is one that you need to know very well to set a truly fast time, so although Hakkinen is a very fast driver, I think the opportunity to set a record pace in the F1 would have been tasked to someone more familiar with the course's 13 miles of turns and elevation changes.

Could it be a Mercedes-McLaren SLR? I seem to remember reading that somewhere, but I doubt it would be 17 seconds quicker than a CGT--that seems to imply an F1 type of racecar.

Yeah, seems pretty bogus to me too, I'd like to know where it arose from though.

Its a fairly recent thing, I only just noticed it the other day. Things like that generally have some kind of story behind them, however disconnected from reality. I wonder what it was..

There was an AutoCar article with XP5 at the 'Ring that speculated on it's course time based on speeds it attained through certain turns. I can't recall what the time was, but it would not suprise me if this claim is somehow related to that article, though from memory Mika had nothing to do with that effort.

The car in question could be the new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722 GT which has recently been announced by Mclaren, there is even a picture on Mclaren's website of the car negotiating the Karousel.

Well, wikipedia lists it as: McLaren F1 #LMXP1 (Promotional Car)

I have no idea where they got that from, since its not on the listed source page, so far as I can see.

I would have expected that if it were legit it would be the LM or the road going GTR, I really have no understanding of how much faster around a track either is than the road car though, but even so, shaving 34 seconds off the only other lap time I could find (for the road car) of 7:45, seems pretty astounding, even with someone like Mika at the wheel.

There is just enough information to pique my interest, however I think I'll leave it at that and if there is any story of interest behind it, perhaps it will emerge into the public domain of its own accord.

Don't think it could be an F1 car as that would lap the ring in well under seven minutes, remember Stefan Bellof lapped the ring in 6mins 11secs in a porsche 956 back in 1983 and sportscars have always been slower than even their contempory F1 cars let alone a current F1 car.

Maybe he wasn't doing a hot lap

Lets not forget the list is specifically for _roadcars_ not racing cars. ;)

I was just reading in an old EVO magazine (Aug 2005) and on page 121 it mentioned that Hans Stuck took an extraordinary Mclaren F1 engined 750BHP BMW X5 on a lap of 7:50.

I'm pretty sure its a slightly modified version from the 1999 LMR. But I think that the one in the LMR is a modified F1...:dunno:
