Hey guys before i started the rebuild on my gold 1987 porsche 944 n/a i encountered a few races. The most fun was at a redlight at about noon, a probably 95-96 purple cam z-28 with some kids in it blasting their music. About my age, but that poor camaro was trashed, or at least the exterior was.

I pull up next to him when the light is red and we sit there and i roll my windows up because they are listening to some poorly written rap. I hear him revving his motor and i look over and he is revving and inching forward. I ignore him.

When the light turned green i dropped it into first and took off, and so did he. I was good car length ahead and gaining till the top of second when he took off past me, he was a good 3 car lengths ahead of me and moving forward. But i started catching him real quick after 70 at 80 I past him and had him in my mirror till about 100 when he finally gave up.

funny thing is, at the time, it was a tired, neglected inline 2.5l 4 hitter. hardly keeping within temps and stuttering all the time. probably hadnt been serviced at all since the mid 90's.

no longer, in a week maybe 9 days, she will be rolling out of the garage for the first time in months. All new top end, with all new valves, ported, block was cleaned, pistons looked great and walls looked great so i kept them. All new injectors, whole motor has new seals, new lines, all new silicone tubing, alternator, new electrical harnesses, new coil, wires, cap, rotor, oil cooler, all new hoses, new reference sensors, dropped the a/c and all compnents weighing in at 65lbs. all new pullys and belts, timing set, belts tensioned with porsche tool, and many many other things. Just freshening verything up before i drop in microsquirt and supercharger i have on the way.

she is beautiful, the camaro will probably still have me 20-60 but hes going to have to work harder for it, but once theres boost, he can kiss my gold ass. josh

Nice race. Being a previous n/a 944 owner I just wanted to chime in and say welcome to the boards. Got any pics of your car? Some pics of the engine rebuilt would be sweet. There are a couple 951 owners on here and most people who contribute to this section are big fans of the 944...

I think your expectations should be a little higher than hondas...

Anyway, sounds like a really nice car. I look forward to seeing the pics of your ca944...

yea aim a lil higher than hondas...well nsx might b difficult, but civics and tegs shouldnt b that bad. even stock my 944 has beaten civics and integra's with mods(granted 0hp mods...) like exhaust and and intake. only lose in my 944 was to a 93 300zx n/a(friend of mine)

Wouldn't say that. It depends on how hard he goes with it. If he just rebuilds it to run ok, then it wouldn't do much. I ran doors with a stock 944 Turbo. However, if he puts th time and money into it, then hell yeah he should be aiming higher.

If you mean me, I didn't have a Honda, I had a 325i. I ran a couple 944s. The last one I ran after the ECU flash and such, I put a good two lengths on. When I was just the CAI, I was running doors-ish.

the only race i really had with my 944 so far was with a ford ranger(old one) i won. he thought my 944 was a fricken mazda rx7, or nissan 300zx

Yeah but an n/a 300zx is nothing to brag about. They are slow as hell.

i know, it was an insult to me that he thought it was a nissan or mazda, not a porsche. i mean they dont even really look all that much the same. but i guess that area of VA doesnt see that many porsches...

I dunno, I can see how one who doesn't know their cars all that well could confuse a 944 for an FC. Maybe not a 300ZX, but an FC, yeah.

Truth spoken.

To the OP: A turbo would make it so he would have never passed you..:grinyes:
Nice car and thanks for keeping one more 944 series car on the streets and out of the dismantler's hands, there aren't too many left :frown:

Where do you live, OH..lol?

Seriously, thats the only state I can count on seeing more than 1 or 2 944's on the road(N/A, S2, whatever)...and I've been back to OTR(48 states and Canada transport) since January and I've seen a total of 3 turbo's on the road. 986/987 and 996/997's are COUNTLESS.

i live in jersey, about 10miles from the PA border. once i get towards nyc, the boxsters and 911 totals go up. but for 944's, i konw of at least 10 of em. one i see everyday on the way home from work. andother at the shop that mine's at, and others just being driven. and a few 924S

I see a ton of them around here. They are beginning to be driven by annoying teenagers.

hey i bought my first porsche(79 924) wen i was 18...i think most people that buy the 944 know what kinda car it is, and respect it.

then there are the annoying teens. i almost bought an 89 n/a for 4g when i was 18, but thought about the fact that it was red, and porsche, and i'm a young male, and insurance would cot more than a trip to the hospital after an accident. so i bought the 924 outta a salvage yard(can u say best 425 bucks ever spent). had that till feb 07, then sold it, and bought the 944 in july.

i already know i'll own a 944/924/968 till i can afford to buy a brand new 911 turbo. i feel they are the best porsches produced(if sale numbers dont help that stat either). maybe not the quickest, but still damn good.
