OK, I admit this is as newbie a question as you can get. I am trying to get the old tie rod end off my Escort and I have the tie rod removed from the knuckle, but now when i try to get the tie rod end itself off the only thing that happens is the tie rod just spins. I see a nut that is tight against the tie rod but am unsure as to which way to turn it, because whern I can not budge it left or right. Any help with this issue is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

Loosen the jam nut while holding the tie-rod with a wrench (or pair of vise grips) on the flat portion of the rod to prevent it from turning. After loosening the jam nut count the number of threads so the new tie-rod can be put in to the same length. The jam nut is turned counter-clockwise in relation to the tie rod end. You might have to hold the shaft with a pair of vise grips to unscrew the tie-rod end. It will be easier to get the jam nut loose if you put the tie-rod back into the steering knuckle.

It may help to spray some penetrating oil on it and let it soak for a while.
