Show Thru ProblemFlaRiptide 11-15-2007, 08:21 AM I recently had my BMW Z4 hood repainted by a company that specializes in BMW and Mercedes painting. The repaint was required due to egg damage on Halloween. The egg left a devit and had ruined the clearcoat finish. Upon picking up the car the job appeared flawless. This morning, with a chill in the air, I noticed that a dew haze covered the outline of the area where the egg mess had been. Being a layman, my assumption would be that the area had not properly been sanded down. Thus the engine heat caused the dew haze in the area of the egg mess. It evaparated within seconds. The cost of the paint job was $400 (hood only). My question is, should I be upset and request a redo? Afterall this was not a Econo paint job. Is this within the norm for the amount paid? sirdanielot 11-28-2007, 11:59 PM This dew haze is usaully caused due to a really busy painter/refinsher. All it is (in most cases) is that instead of repainting your entire hood, they did a spot job in the damaged area. this is by all means acceptable and alot more cost effective, but is only done because getting it done quickly is important. After refinishing the hood and allowing it to cure completely, the clearcoat is buffed with cutting/rubbing compound to eliminate any minor imperfections in the surface and then buffed with wax and polish. The polish is water resistant and if the shop only polished the damaged area of your hood it is very likely that it would cause the haze outline in humid weather. This is nothing to worry about; you could wax your car to eliminate the problem or just wait until the polish wears off. Also, $400 is common for the refinishing, especially if there is an effect in the paint or clear (e.g. metalic, pearl, kandy... ect.) I'm an autobody repairman from north florida and moister clouds like on your hood are no stranger. I hope I've helped, God bless vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
