2006 tire wear

Gents,

Been gone for a while. Had some time tonight and thought I would catch up on what has been going on.

My 2006 has the stock BFG's on it and even though they have only 7,000 miles on them they look like they have 3 times that much. The front tires have slight feathering on the tread and seem to be wearing the outer edges more than the rest of the tire.

The back tires are wearing evenly, as would be expected, but they are wearing much to quickly. I do not carry passengers or heavy loads and most of my time is on the highway. Not much off road, yet...

Is it because these are a soft composition?

I know the front end probably needs an alignment, but I am kind of disappointed if this is the case. Does the rapid wear have to do with the fact there are no hubs to disconnect the tires from the diff?

The reason I ask is that I had Jeeps in the past, but had Warn hubs on them so the tire wear was nothing out of the ordinary.

At this rate, it will cost me an arm and a leg just to keep this truck in tires. I have a Ford 250 with 50,000 miles on BFG's, same size tire, and I will probably get another 15,000 out of them, the way they look.

If anyone has had the same issues and found a solution, help would be appreciated.

Good to be back...

You'll be lucky to get 20,000 on a set of tires on a new car from the factory. That's what I've always heard from people w/ new cars, my own experiences and the tire shop I help keep in business.

Have you had them balanced and rotated yet?

The stock long trails suck. I have 29k on mine, and they are ready for the dump. When I was at the dealer for a window regulator they told me I got a long life out of them. I'm planning on bfg at/ko's next month, buddy ran them on his silverado for around 75k miles before he traded it in, so hopefully I can get somewhere around the same out of them.

Skibum and Chubbybubba, thanks for the info. I have the BFG's you speak of on my F-250 and they have over 50 K on them and are still going strong. I think I will put them on the Xterra when the time comes, which won't be too long, the way they are wearing...

You two have a great Turkey Day, ok?? I just started a week's vacation this evening, so I plan on chilling out and enjoying the season.

Later...

My 06 Xterra S with BFG SHORT trails is also doing the same thing chopping the edges. I noticed the entire thread chopping at 1,500 miles. Had dealer align and rotate at 4,000 now only the outsides chop. I rotate every oil change at 3,000.It seems to be a common problem since i looked at a few 05+ Xterras at dealers and parking lots and most are worse than mine.Reviews on tire rack give bad ratings especially on wet roads but the tires perform fine for me with use in snow and sand. I just don't like the wear and like others stated i ran BFG AT's on almost every 4x4 i've owned and they are far more aggressive but wear much better.I'm at 17,000 now and will be lucky to get 30,000 . Then i will probably replace with Cooper STT's 265/75/16's..

BOB,

Glad to see that it is just not my Xterra, but then again, I don't wish this on others...

I will wear these tires out, letting the suspension settle in, since the truck only has less than 9k miles on it, and then I will get some good tires. As I stated, the ones on my F-250 have over 53K on them now and they still have a lot of life left in them. Since that is a company truck, it carries a lot of heavy test equipment, so the tires do get a workout. So I am thinking of going with them. They are also BFG's, but apparently a lot better style of tire.

Gotta go. I worked all night last night doing high voltage maint. testing and troubleshooting at 1 Ferry Bldg. in San Fran last night and I need some sleep.

Thanks for your reply, and Season's Greetings to you..
