I had my 90 Sub not shifting out of 1st but had reverse. I checked the detent cable and if was frayed but working OK. I took it into a shop to have it check and they came back witrh a $2200 rebuild estrimated for soft parts ONLY and if any bearings needed replaced it would be more. After checking prices for a crate tran from Shucks and another tran shop I could egt one for about $1100 if I installed or $1500 they install. One shop asked me what was wrong and then told me to check my govener. After checking the govnner I found the plastic worm gear broken. $20 for a new gear I was on the road. Hope this helps someone else.
