I recently purchased a bone stock 95 z28. im in the process of saving up and building this car. the engine is perfect but the transmission is having a little shift lag. would rebuilding the transmission with stock parts be a good idea with extra ponies in the future? where can i get prices on performance parts for my stock transmission? or where can i see prices on a performance transmission that will bolt to my stock motor? please send me url links! i would really appreciate it!

Anytime I'd even concider opening a trans up for service in a performance application, I'd be shopping around for shift 'improver' kits. Your trans is electronicly controlled and may have some adjustability that way. I say may because it is a OBD-I hybrid and I don't quite remember if there's a whole lot of room to play with on it.

the tranny in my IROC is an older 700R4, but i highly recomend getting a performance shift kit for it. I had mine rebuilt with the B&M stage II shift kit, a corvette 1st to 2nd servo, and threw a 2600rpm stall converter in front with a kevlar lockup clutch. it has by far been the biggest seat of the pants improvment i have done to the car, it drives completely different. the stall speed on the converter is a little high for a daily driver around town. on the highway the lockup clutch negates the slippage. Most dealerships shouldnt have a problem using B&M parts in the rebuild. in fact, if they refuse, they have to give you the GM parts for free. i dont have the legal jargon off the top of my head. but basically if they are going to say that an aftermarket part, (not huge modifications mind you, more along the lines of spark plugs, and oil filters, and such) voids the warranty, they have to provide you with the dealership part for free. something about extortion or something. and yes, i was a corvette tech assistant at a dealership, and we ran into that problem a time or two. So really when you look at the cost, even if you dont go with an aftermarket converter, youll be spending close to the same on parts to get the better B&M stuff, and spending the same on labor. and the car will be a helluva lot more fun to drive. also with quicker shifts the tranny temp stays lower and the clutches last longer.
