I Have a Subwoofer Question

I just installed a Kenwood KDC-MP4032 HU in my Stealth. The unit sounds great, very clear, but it is lacking in the low end. It isn't the speakers or the enclosure because I had them hooked up to the stock HU for a couple of days and they had plenty of low end.

I have played with the settings and I can't find anything to improve it anymore. I just wonder if most of the low frequencies are going to the sub ports?

I have never installed a subwoofer because I normally don't care for them in a car, but I think I need one just to give some more depth. However, I don't want an amp and I just want a small sub, like 8-10 inches.

Can you guys recommend a good sounding, small, sub that doesn't need an amp?

Infinity Basslink or Basslink II is your best friend. 200-250 watt powered 10" sub hooks up easily to an aftermarket deck and comes with a wired subwoofer volume remote. Also is designed primarily to save cargo space for vehicles that need it like sedans. Best powered sub for the money and size. You should be able to pick up a brand new one on Ebay for less than 200 bucks.

You can pick up an 8 or 10" Alpine or Inifinity for nothing. That will give you some nice sounding bass for cheap.


woops just saw that you dont want an amp. Basslink or other combo sysytem would work.

Yeah, the amp will come later when I can afford a nice one with components.

If you had plenty of low end with a stock head unit and now you don't with a Kenwood head unit then something isn't right. Any head unit better than stock should have a noticable improvement in the low end as well as the mids and highs.

There has to be a either a loudness, subwoofer or high pass filter setting needs changed to get it right, or possibly a speaker is not wired right and out of phase with the rest and cancelling out the bass.

You can still get a sub if you want, it just doesn't make sense to me to have good bass with a stock radio and not with a name brand replacement.

I've tried every setting, and I can't seem to figure it out. It isn't like it doesn't have depth and there is bass, just not as much as before.

I guess with a basslink system I'll have to run power so I'll have that there for later when I decide to run an amp. What would be the best way to install that? I've seen people just run the 12v straight to the battery but I think it would be better to run it to the fuse block.

If you lost bass output with the new head unit I'd agree that the high pass is probably the reason. When you run the power wire usually people connect it to the battery. It has a built in fuse so you can just use a ring terminal and bolt it where the battery terminal clamps on. I'd run 4 ga. so in the future if you did want a better amp/sub you won't have to increase the wire size.
