1986 Civic stalling

I recently bought a 1986 Honda Civic 1.3L Hatchback (carburetor), no a/c, 230,000 miles.
When starting it up in the morning, or after it’s sat for quite a while, I have
no problem with it cranking and starting. Starts right up. Right after it starts, it sounds like it wants to go to high idle but stalls out ….unless I keep giving it gas. After about 5 minutes of warming it up, it runs fine…..no stalling with a smooth idle.
What I’ve done since I bought the car:
Put on a new rebuilt carburetor along with a new insulator block (gasket)
Replaced spark plugs
Replaced fuel filter
Checked fuel pump
Checked for vacuum leaks
……Still having the same problem. It does need a new muffler and I think the timing belt was replaced at 180,000 miles.
I'm stuck at what might be causing this. Any help would be appreciated.

kem272...not sure if you solved your problem here or not, but here is a thought. I just stumbled upon your thread today. I have a 83 civic 1500 automatic hatchback with 123k...having carb issues. Anyway, I was reading my shop manual about the automatic choke that says:
(briefly) auto choke controls choke during warm up...has a bimetal coil, thermister, heater....when engine starts, choke opens small amount, voltage to heater heats bimetal coil which unwinds and opens choke valve, amount determined by heater temp...also affected by a thermovalve...
anyway, seems that this is a place to start researching. There is an air temp sensor in the air cleaner housing where the air enters. Then there is the intake air diaphram at this same location.
Let me know if you want me to scan and email you any pages that could help.

Thanks for writing, Casey. I haven't solved the problem yet. I did adjust the bimetal choke coil and that didn't seem to change anything.
I've kind of threw my arms up with this one. I'm not a mechanic....just a jack-of-all-trades but I might just have to break down and spend the money to have it looked at. It has 238,000 miles so I'm guessing it could be a lot of things from a clogged catalytic converter to a bad coil to I don't know what. I have a 1983 Civic shop manual that I'm referencing from but it seems like nothing I try produces any positive results. I do appreciate you writing though and if I do find out a fix I'll let you know.

Sounds good. Hope it works out. I am debating getting rid of the stock carb on my 83 and convert to a downdraft Weber...but that too has problems. Trying surfing over to the www.redpepperracing.com forum...there is a ton of information over there. I was reading pages and pages of information I found helpful.
