Wheel swap question!Gary L 10-16-2007, 07:00 PM Have a 2003 GC Limited with fancy wheels and the tire preasure sensors that reads inside the vehicle. My wheels are shot from salt and the beads won't seal. Stock wheels are 17" with 235/65R tires. A buddy has a gorgeous set of wheels/tires he took off of his 2004 Dodge Dakota. They are 235/70/16". Standing them side by side there is not much difference in height at all. Really need to know if Dakota wheels will fit on a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Also, if they will fit, what do I do to shut off the tire preasure read out on the computer. Right now I am loosing about 5 pounds per day on 3 out of 4 tires so need to figure this out before the real cold gets here. Thanks Gary dksob81 10-16-2007, 07:05 PM Gary, You TPMS has sensor in each wheel these sensors can be removed from the wheels and you can put them in the new wheels. On the other hand you can fix your leak, Corrosion on the bead is very common especially on aluminum wheels. A good tire shop knows what to do. We use a 3M Scotch Brite type pad on a air grinder and clean the wheels then wipe some grease around the bead area and it shoud seal up real good. Gary L 10-16-2007, 07:34 PM Thanks DK! When I had the new tires installed I had to bring it back and they did exactly what you said. Its now a year later and they won't do it again unless I pay $30 for each wheel plus the cost to reballance. Tires are just OK right now with maybe 10-12K miles left on them so hardly worth dismounting/cleaning/remounting and reballancing at a cost of nearly $200. Thought about using slime in them to get me thru the winter until new tires are necessary but I have the Dakota wheels and tires free for the taking and really would like to know if they will fit. Both are 5 lug wheels but someone told me a different bolt pattern is used on Dodge then is used on Jeep. Someone here could probably save me the hassel of jacking and changing to find out the answer. BTW, I hate those TPMS sensors and have already had to replace a couple at rediculous prices. They can keep that system in the future! Gary reekor 10-17-2007, 08:20 AM They wont fit. The Dodge Dakota has 6 bolt rims while the jeep uses 5 bolt rims. See the problem? You can clean the old rims, You'll need to get the tires removed, all you need is a drill machine and a wire brush for it and a small can of rust paint. The problem is that the tire shop will clean your rims and pop the tires back on, and unless they coat the alloy with something after cleaning it. The alloy will corrode in about a year and you'll be back right where you started. Have a 2003 GC Limited with fancy wheels and the tire preasure sensors that reads inside the vehicle. Thanks Gary Gary L 10-17-2007, 05:15 PM Here is one of the wheels off the Dakota! Not sure if it was an 04 or 05 or 2 or 4 wheel drive but as I said, it is a 5 lug wheel. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v722/Gamalot/Personal%20Pics/DSCN1916.jpg Everyone is telling me it won't work but only because of the 5 lug Vs 6 lug thing. I don't know but maybe my buddies Dakota was different or something. If I had access to a machine I would do as you guys are saying and just fix the stock wheels right! These Dakota wheels and tires have 3000 miles on them and were left here when my buddy moved. He does not want them so I am just trying to see if they can work without having to get out the jack and lug wrench to just do it here in the driveway. Gary reekor 10-17-2007, 09:50 PM Never seen that before, Looks like you will have to find out the hard way on this one. Here is one of the wheels off the Dakota! Gary Gary L 10-18-2007, 08:40 AM I tried and failed last night! They sure would have looked nice but as one fellow had mentioned, the bolt pattern is different with the Dakota rim needing the lugs spread wider appart. Back to the drawing board and think I found a Jeep enthusiast with a tire machine so I can dismount and do the repair myself possibly this weekend. Thank you for the assistance here. Gary DanGee711 10-18-2007, 09:01 AM hi mate!why would you wanna change your profile from 17" anyway? reekor 10-18-2007, 04:21 PM If you mark the rim and tire and mount it back on to the same rim in the same position you shouldnt need to reballance everything. Gary Gary L 10-18-2007, 06:16 PM hi mate!why would you wanna change your profile from 17" anyway? It is not so much that I want to change the profile at all! I have bad stock wheels and will need new tires by spring. It will cost close to $200 to dismount the current tires, clean the wheels up myself and then remount and re ballance. I have this set of Dakota wheels and tires just sitting here in my way and was checking to see if they would fit. They won't! Fact of the matter is that the Dakota 16" wheels and tires are actually a bit larger then the Jeep 17"s. Enough larger that if they had bolted right on I would still be concerned with clearance issues and have to be sure they won't rub at full steer or bottom out into the wheel wells. Does anyone think that slime stuff they put in ATV tires might seal the bead leaks I have? I am pretty disgusted over this because it is a real PITA when your computer is constantly flashing out Low Preasure in 3 out of 5 tires and all I have is one of those small emergency cigg lighter compressors that takes about 5 minutes per tire to get them full, every day!
