Helppppppp!!!!pontiacs98 10-15-2007, 04:29 PM My 1996 Grand Prix has me stumped!! Whenbever I turn the car off it will not start again, like its dead. I have put a brand New Batt. and alt. in it and it still does it. If I put the battery charger on it fort about 5min. then it will start. Its like it has a stuck open circuit draining it maybe?? Does anyone know anything about this????????????????? richtazz 10-15-2007, 05:10 PM Does it start on it's own (with the jumper cables disconnected) after the 5-min, or will it only start with the jumpers still connectted to the other vehicle/battery? pontiacs98 10-16-2007, 04:45 PM I t will start on its own, but if you start it then turn it off, and try to restart it again, it will not start, even if you drive it for five minutes or three hours it doesnt matter, like its almost the ignition or sumthin, i have no idea and its about to be winter i dont want to have to plug my dam car in every mornin b4 i go to work thanks ericn1300 10-16-2007, 06:29 PM I t will start on its own, but if you start it then turn it off, and try to restart it again, it will not start, even if you drive it for five minutes or three hours it doesnt matter, like its almost the ignition or sumthin, i have no idea and its about to be winter i dont want to have to plug my dam car in every mornin b4 i go to work thanks my 96 did the same thing, turned out to be a fuel pump going out. I had to wait 30 to 60 mins for it to cool down and restart. when you get in the no start condition check the fuels pressure at the shrader valve. check this link for a pretty picture courtesy of BNaylor. i didn't need the pressure guage, mine was almost zero when i tested it with a screwdiver. pontiacs98 10-16-2007, 07:19 PM No its not that it does not start, It does not even turn over, it just clicks like the battery is dead, besides I just put a brand new fuel pump in it about a month ago......anymore suggestions?? Thanks for the imput tho its much appreciated so what happens is if i jump my car it will run fine, no matter how long I run it, whenever it is turned off it will not start without being jumped or puttting the charger on it for bout 5 min. It has a new batt and alternator. HELP troy1 10-16-2007, 10:20 PM What happens if you hit the starter with a hammer will it start then? Don't go crazy with the hammer could damage the magents inside. richtazz 10-17-2007, 06:44 AM Any security light on when the no-start happens? If not, I would say you have a starter going bad. The armature has a flat spot which the battery cannot overcome. After the 5-min charge, the slight increase in voltage is just enough to overcome the flat spot and the starter will turn. pontiacs98 10-17-2007, 01:06 PM I have not tried hitting the starter yet, ill go try right now, No the security light is not on, mayb ill get a new starter and try that and see what happens, any more ideas anyone?? Thanks so much for all your help so far, i really want to get this fixed pontiacs98 10-19-2007, 12:16 PM I put a Brand New Starter in it yesterday and its doin the same damn thing, ANYONE KNOW WHATS GOING ON??? Ignition mayb??? richtazz 10-19-2007, 04:01 PM You need to check and see if you have voltage at the "S" terminal on the starter solenoid with the key in the start position when it doesn't start. If you don't have voltage, I would look at the neutral safety switch and ignition switch for melted or corroded terminals. Speaking of the neutral safety switch, have you tried shifting to neutral (instead of park) to see if the car will start then? pontiacs98 10-20-2007, 02:12 PM The "S" would be the big terminal on the solonoid where the batt hooks up to right?? would I have to take the steering column apart to check the ignition in there for corrodeed terminals?? ill try the neutral thing but im sure that wont work the way my frickn lucks been goin with that thing, for some reason i think its the ignition or sumn in the ignition, i just havent been to ambitious to take the column apart it seems like a lot of work Mickey#1 10-20-2007, 03:07 PM What engine do you have? Here's a wiring diagram for a 92 Bonneville with the 3.8 engine. You need to find out if the small wire (Purple - PPL on this diagram) that goes to the starter solenoid is getting 12 volts when the key is turned to the start position. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c120/BCGearhead/Wiring%20Diagrams/92SEStarting.jpg pontiacs98 10-21-2007, 12:05 PM I have a 3.1 vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
