98 won't start, has sparkskrambler 10-06-2007, 10:41 PM I have a 98 avenger that I just bought, brought it home washed it and drove it into the garage. Seemed to run good when I went to pick it up and ran good the little bit I've driven it around the yard, But now it won't start. (It has spark, pulled one out and cranked it over)I can hear the fuel pump prime the system when I turn the key on. The spark looks white(not blue) It also has an aftermarket security/remote starter system that I had no problem with before I pulled it into the garage. But there is no manual to the system or even the car for that matter. It has the 2.5 v6 in it. I've read through most of these posts and notice a few people had similar problems, one post said they replaced the "ASD Relay" What is that and where is it located on these cars? Any help or ideas would be appreciated!!!!! skrambler 10-08-2007, 12:52 AM Ok, I removed the remote starter/alarm. So I'm back to stock, I have spark when I crank it over and when I pull a plug after cranking it over the plug is wet with gas, this makes me think its a timing thing. timing belt is in tact, any ideas?,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, doming34 10-09-2007, 06:37 PM The asd relay is located under the hood,by the fire wall where you see three relays. It is the center relay.I have incountered the same problem as you.If you find a fix could you post thanks!:banghead: corning_d3 10-09-2007, 10:07 PM If your getting fuel on the plugs, then the ASD relay is powering up. Timing is a possibility. So is a bad cam or crank sensor, but without diagnostics it's hard to say. skrambler 10-10-2007, 08:38 PM I pulled the crank sensor out and tested it with an ohm meter and got nothing, I'm heading for the parts store for a new one tomorrow, I'll post my results! corning_d3 10-11-2007, 12:41 AM I don't think you can test it with a dvom. You really need an oscilloscope. Plus, a new sensor will run around $60-$70 at a parts store. skrambler 10-13-2007, 08:50 PM I got the car running, but I'm not sure what the actual problem was. I went to the local salvage yard and pulled a distributor and a crank sensor out of a wrecked car, when i got home, since I had my car all torn apart, I changed them both at the same time and it fired right up! spent $25.95 for both parts. I'd kinda lean towards the distributor as the problem, when I was at the salvage yard I'd say about 90% of the 2.5ltr motors I looked at already had the distributor missing. That tells me that they must have a lot of issues.... Thanks for the help!!!!!! skrambler 10-13-2007, 08:53 PM I also did read in my Hanes manual that weak spark is the same as no spark in these cars!!!!!!!! vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
