**HELP** Fan Clutch RemovalHanibalTheCannibal 10-06-2007, 06:00 PM :banghead: :banghead: I cannot for the life of me get my fan clutch nut off:banghead: :banghead: I know it is reverse from the rotation of the fan's direction. I am trying to loosen clockwise, as I stand in front of engine compartment. I called my mechanic In texas and he says they use a air hammer attachment (pneumatic?) but in other times they use a large chisel and a good hammering to back the nut off. I tried all that (except I DO NOT have an air hammer). I have tried to beat the nut's edge with a good cold chisel and hard hits with the hammer. I am getting some good "bites" with the chisel but it still wont back off. I have soaked with some WD40. I am using a large crescent wrench to tuen and I just turn the motor over OR the serpentine belt slips. How the he11 can I get this off? It is stuck on full blast usually (80% of the time even when cold) and is eating my mileage up. 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. 5.2 **PLEASE** help. Is there a tool to hold the pulley? PS There are no pulley bolts to hold onto. xj31 10-06-2007, 10:13 PM :banghead: :banghead: I cannot for the life of me get my fan clutch nut off:banghead: :banghead: I know it is reverse from the rotation of the fan's direction. I am trying to loosen clockwise, as I stand in front of engine compartment. if you are turning it clockwise, you are making matters worse, since that would be tightening it.the tool for holding it is kind of a spanner wrench with 2 pins that go in the holes in the pulley.I usually just tap it with an air hammer and they come right off. Are you freakin serious??? The fan turns counterclockwise, so clockwise should back the nut off, right? Jeez I really hope that you are wrong, please explain if I am turning it backwards. When I stand in front of the engine bay, the fan turns counterclockwise, so I have been trying to go clockwise (left handed threads, or backwards threads as I call them). Am I right? Or should I turn the nut in the direction of the fans rotation? That seems that when the fan turns on, the rotatio would loosen it. HanibalTheCannibal 10-06-2007, 11:31 PM :runaround: OMG, it just made sense to me:runaround: So the fans turns counterclockwise, then I should back the nut off counter-clockwise to loosen, because as the engine turns, the fan tightens itself!!!!! Am I right?? HanibalTheCannibal 10-07-2007, 12:08 AM :screwy: And to think I consider myself to be somewhat intelligent :screwy: Well it came off, just like that!! I bet I had that thing torqued to 200 ft/lbs from a day of trying with sledge hammer, torch, crescent, etc. Thanks a bunch. **cough cough** theres nothing to see here. Carry on. xj31 10-07-2007, 01:13 PM :runaround: OMG, it just made sense to me:runaround: So the fans turns counterclockwise, then I should back the nut off counter-clockwise to loosen, because as the engine turns, the fan tightens itself!!!!! Am I right?? Yeah,I guess the pulley kind of screws itself into the fan clutch as the engine runs.Glad you got it. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
