Help me ID my TC, Diffs PleaseHanibalTheCannibal 10-04-2007, 08:43 PM I just bought my first 4wd. It is a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, 5.2 with 65,250 miles for $3500. I have never driven a 4wd, and I dont know what I am looking at as far as types of transfer cases (242, 249?). **I want to change the fluids in the transfer case with synthetic, but which fluid do I get? I really like Mobil1. I also want to change the diff (front and back) with synthetic fluid. I have a pump thing to draw the fluid out. HOW DO I know if I need limited slip additive, and does this go in transfer case, or differentials? If it goes in the differentials, does it go in the fronat AND rear? ***PLEASE REPLY**** CyberManiaK 10-04-2007, 11:08 PM WOW that's a very nice price.. If your ZJ is 4wd all time it has the 249. On the Diff's I did replace yesterday also and put Synthetic Penzoil 75/140 For the transfere case use Automatic oil in my case i put Dexron III The owner manual says: If it have the tow package use 75 / 140 if doesn't 80/90. About the limited slip. I think you could check it if you raise your rear (both tires) and try to rotate 1 tire if both move on the same direcction you have one. Mine have it also but i didn't know about the additive until i read the owners manual. Tomorrow i will put it also. Good Luck dksob81 10-05-2007, 07:13 AM Your ZJ has a 249 transfer case, with a Dana30 in the front and either a Dana35 or Dana44 in the rear. There should be a tag bolted to the Differential cover that says USE LIMITED SLIP ADDITIVE, but alot of people don't put the tag back on when they change the diff fluid - so it may not be there. I would use the additive anyways just to be sure, it won't hurt anything to use it if it doesn't need it. HanibalTheCannibal 10-05-2007, 08:10 AM WOW that's a very nice price.. Good Luck Thanks. I hoped it was a good deal. The only thing is this jeep hasn't been driven much, and in my mind that can lead to problems. I already spent $300 on it, and I think I can see about $500 more. After all that I think I will have a nice jeep. This is our first 4wd. its kind of different than a 2wd :) I hear a sound coming from the front driver side I think. There is a boot that is missing, and a big greasy knuckle is sh owing. The grease looks very clean though. Is it hard to change this out? I have a whole bunch of tools and I love working on my own vehicles. 1. Can this (CV?) boot be changed easily? 2. If I need a bearing is this difficult? 3. I want to change the shock absorbers, to Monroe Sensa-trac, is this an easy DIY job? I have rebuilt an entire 77 ford truck from top to bottom, engine inlcuded, but this is a different animal all together. HanibalTheCannibal 10-05-2007, 08:11 AM PS, so this jeep is considered a "ZJ"? Thanks for clearing that up, I see all kinds of letters for these jeeps (CJ, YJ, etc etc) vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
