Amsoil 0W-302string 10-04-2007, 05:47 PM Is 0W-30 oil OK for my 03 4.8? How many quarts does it actually hold with filter change? silverado122775 10-04-2007, 05:54 PM Is 0W-30 oil OK for my 03 4.8? How many quarts does it actually hold with filter change? Use the recommended oil weight that is in your user manual. I believe it is 5w-30. If you use anything thiner than 5w and thicker than 10w, then you could cause early termination to your enigne. If you truck is under warrenty, you could void it out. How many miles on your truck? What year? 2string 10-04-2007, 06:03 PM 2003 70k The Amsoil site recommends 0w-30 it's there first choice there second is 5w-30 silverado122775 10-04-2007, 06:22 PM So when your engine Fails, are they going to cover the cost to repair it? I don't think so, even if they claim it you would have to prove it. Don't take the chance.. use the manufacture's recommendation. 5w-30 2string 10-04-2007, 06:28 PM OK,I think I would feel better using the recommended weight too. Thanks for your input. rjeffery 10-04-2007, 06:44 PM Your 4.8 hold 6 quarts w/filter change. 2string 10-04-2007, 06:49 PM Thanks, may I ask what you use for oil? rjeffery 10-04-2007, 07:31 PM 5w30 Conventional. Normally Penzoil or whatever is reasonably priced. Not the cheapest, but not the most expensive. daman 10-04-2007, 07:46 PM A 0w30 can be used in the winter(i use it too,Mobil-1 0w30) without issues,i woundn't use it in the summer tho... weo38 10-05-2007, 07:08 AM I also think that the 0W-30 oil may be more expensive. I used to run it but now run 5W-30. 2string 10-05-2007, 07:17 AM Yes is is more expensive but amsoil says it's has more protection properties then the 5-30 and last longer. silverado122775 10-05-2007, 09:22 AM Thanks, may I ask what you use for oil? Ever since it's first oil change I have always used Castrol GTX 5w30 I now have 160K miles on it and it has never hicupped. I am thinking about switching to the High milage, but I have not decided yet. knogoodidleft 10-05-2007, 01:44 PM Mobil 1 fully synthetic, 5-w30, every 3000 miles or so, 50+k no problems, I change mine so often because I run my truck hard, everyday. This last change I threw 1qt of lucas synthetic oil treatment in. 2string 10-05-2007, 02:52 PM They say there's not much difference in standard oils,is there with synthetic brands? Slowprocess 10-05-2007, 03:41 PM I'm probably the roughest person on a silverado here(countless nitrous bottles put through it) and I've had zero problems out of my 6.0L. I've always and will continue to always use the Castrol Synthetic blend 10w 30. I figure that if its held up to what I've put it through, it has to be a pretty good oil. 2string 10-05-2007, 03:49 PM Just wondering, why don't you go all the way "full synthetic"? 2string 10-05-2007, 03:53 PM Forgot to ask, do you change the oil after every run or use it for 6 months or so? Slowprocess 10-05-2007, 04:51 PM Forgot to ask, do you change the oil after every run or use it for 6 months or so? I go 3000-5000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first :grinyes: To be honest, when I started using it several years ago, I was still skiddish about going to a full synthetic, so I gave the blend a try. After running this for so long, I guess I kind of have the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mindset now. I do use Castrol Syntec in my camaro, and have had zero problems with it so far. 2string 10-05-2007, 05:03 PM Thanks for the response, I understand. Cadillakin'98 10-08-2007, 01:26 AM Just out of curiousity, how the hell can 0-30 have more protection properties than 5-30? daman 10-08-2007, 08:15 AM Just out of curiousity, how the hell can 0-30 have more protection properties than 5-30? It's lower cold viscosity(0w) will flow quicker to vital areas faster, thus reducing start up wear, where most of the wear on an engine happens. silverado122775 10-08-2007, 10:51 AM You are not going to see much differance in 0w and 5w. Unless you live in Alaska. Do you? The problem with 0w oil is that they do not do as well when the engine gets hot, because it does not have the viscosity to resist the heat. The Oil will break down faster. Again, will Amsoil pay for the engine repairs when it breaks down? 2string 10-08-2007, 11:43 AM I talked to the Amsoil tech support and they said, the only difference in protection is for cold starting they both work the same at operating temperture. silverado122775 10-08-2007, 03:36 PM Do you what you feel comfortable with 2string 10-08-2007, 03:46 PM Thanks I'm comfortable with what you said 5w-30w vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
