timing chain

hello i have a 2000 mitsubishi mirage 62000 miles on it .. the shop says i should replace timing chain??? they say this is a normal scheduled service at 60000 miles. the car runs fine are they trying to rip me off... thank you for your time.

You have a timing belt, not a chain. Yes, replacing it as per schedule is a maintenance item. If not replaced, eventually it will break and leave you stranded. Also, since yours it what is called an "interference" engine, a broken belt will cause the pistons to hit the valves, doing severe mechanical damage. This is not to say that you need to panic as there is a pretty good margin of safety in the 60K schedule. In your place I'd get it done in the next few months just to be sure. I have the same situation coming up with my daughter's '00 1.8 next year so I understand your concerns.
