At slow speeds, a perfect example would be pulling into a parking sport, I get major thumping while turning the wheel either left or right. It started about a year ago but was very minor, now it sounds as if it maybe on its last legs. The sounds comes from the front of the car. Took it to a local mechanic who thought it was a 4 wheel drive transmission problem and gave me the number of a transmission specialist. The car is has manual trans and has 130,000 miles. Just checking if anyone my have any ideas or thoughs.

Thanks!

I second wiseguy01's suggestions (check the CV joints boots for tear-the grease is probably all over the place and the joints are making a racket like a machine gun rattling off when you turn the steering). Thumping is more associated with flat-topped tires though. Power steering belt if loose or broken is also going to result in vibrations felt through the steering wheel as well. What are the other signs aside from noise?

The car thumps and vibrates only when it's moving and the wheel is turned all the way to either side. People out side the car will look at it from the noise (knocking/thumping). I don't think it's power steering since that would make the noise even if the car wasn't moving, I think. The guy who looked at it (quickly) thought it was a 4 wheel drive problem.

Thanks again

id probly say axles too..no mistaking that clunking sound they make when turning..my old crx did it only when i turned left hard..but then i got another rex and did a motor swap so no worries on my axles anymore..do you use 4wheel very much???

I don't think it goes into 4 wheel drive mode much since its an automatic thing. The mechanic I stopped by got in the car and we went about 20 fee while turning (hard in one direction) he thought it was some kind of 4 wheel drive problem in the front wheels. I asked about cv and he didn't think so. He gave me the number to a transmission guy. It sound like cv to me also but I would think a mechanic wouldn't so quickly rule that out. I've never heard a car with a cv problem so i'm really guessing. :)

Fixed it! It was a problem with the rear differential fluid. It's very common. See link for more info if needed,

I had exactly the same situation. I have a 2003 CRV-EX with 56000 miles. Solved it by replacing the rear differential fluid as well.
