Is this a broken tranny ?

So I'm looking at buying a 95 GST for my woman. Lots of mods done to it already. Story is that the tranny messed up on him. While in first gear near 6000 rpm, the front tires locked up. Then he pushed the clutch in and pulled over and hasn't driven it since. This car is nicely equiped with a quaife LSD (oh thank you sweet baby Jesus). When I went to see it he showed me that when you push the car it clunks. But otherwise it runs nicely. Any ideas from what I've said, do you think that the manual tranny is at fault ?

Could it be a clutch problem? I'm really not sure, but im very interested to find out whats causing that.

Ya I'm not sure.... Anyone know of any tests that I should be performing to solve this one ? He was hesitant to let me try and put it in gear. But I think I would have to start there.

Its not the clutch. My guess is either a broken tranny or a problem with the lsd. You just need to pull it to find out. At least you should be able to get a good deal on it.

Besides tearing into it, are there any other way to narrow it down ?

You just going to have to try and drive it. Crank it up and try to put it in gear. See if it will go into any gear and if it will move.

Yeah, I think the only way to know is if you tried to put it in gear. If it just locked up on him, my guess would be something in the tranny broke (i.e. a gear or something, a shift fork shouldnt have broken if he wasnt shifting) and is preventing it from turning. If so, a tranny rebuild is in order but your quiaffe should be ok provided it didnt get shit all up in it. I would just try it while its in neutral and see if it can shift, then be gentle and try it running. If theres a gear broken, you'll know it.

I do all the time, occasionally pop the rev limiter. Its kinda hard not to when you have no traction in first gear.

If you can get the car for cheap enough even if the tranny is bad, it's not that expensive to get a new used tranny and drop it in!
