ok i have a a 98 3000gt base model sohc..i put long headers on it a while back ( eliminating my egr ), as you know there is a spot on the intake manifold for the egr piping that goes the the rear stock exhaust manifold then another spot on the manifold where what i call the egr valve, not sure if thats what it is..but i left the egr valve on just blocked off the piping thing, cuz the valve had a hose line to it so i left it alone, my CEL has been on the hole time since the headers, i tried today taking the plate off, leaving an open hole in the intake manifold to get some clean air in so the egr can actually be functional, and reset my battery to clear the CEL light for know to see if it turns back on, hopefully not..i dont get it..why does removing the egr pipe trigger CEL, the motor is running cleaner now..it should be happy! why CEL!?!?!..any ideas on how to keep the light off, assuming its coming back on, which it probly will...

buy a JDM ECU

Jason

EDIT- never mind.. you are OBD2 so that wont work..

You dont want to leave the hole open. That will be a HUGE vac leak and the car wont stay running.

The EGR is supposed to somehow make the engine burn cleaner. What the fuck ever. There are ways OBD2 guys are able to remove the EGR and keep the CEL from lighting. you just have to look around to find the answers

see i thought the same thing about a huge leak..but that hole out the manifold SUCKS air, not blow..so when ever the egr valve opens it just sucks air..which for the most part is clean, i was just gonna buy a mini air filter and get it to stay in there to protect the hole..but as long as it keeps my CEL off, im happy..

It wont keep the CEL off. You will suffer a huge loss if the car even runs. And also think about it, I said a VAC leak. VAC as in vacuum, of course it sucks air. Do not do it.

sigh...

leaving that open will allow all kinds of unmetered air into your engine...thats a BAD thing. Block it off, and search for a way to turn off the CEL. Pretty sure there's a 10 cent resistor fix for it.

no you guys are wrong..my car is running great..the egr valve NEEDS to breathe, meaning you cant block it off..i just took my previous block off plate drilled a hole and welded a tube on it with a filter on the end so it dont suck any items or dirt down..my car is ideling and driving as good as ever now..and check engine light has been off for over a week since ive done it..plus resistors only work on 1st gen gts..not 2nd..

Maybe I understood wrong what you did...so you disconnected where the EGR connects to the header and put a filter there? Like that it would operate normal except it would just be putting in normal air instead of exhaust gas when the EGR opens...which still means you're running a bit lean whenever the EGR opens up...but since it only opens under light/moderate load it should be fine. (lean because normally the gas the EGR puts in just takes up space in the combustion chamber and hinders combustion rather than helps it, plus lowers comb. chamb. temps)

Want to take a picture of it? I'm interested to see it.
