plastic body, 1 g.

Kinda neat. It had a plastic body with doors that slid back into the body while driving, which is kinda neat.
It could pull 1 g on the skidpad.
It cost a fortune, for no apparent reason.
It was underpowered, taking a 2.5 liter from the 325 with 170 hp. If it had, say, 300, it would then be in the realm of legend.

I see them once in a while around town.. they look pretty good.. they certainly get more attention than Z3's.. It was expensive but is a very entertaining drive... very rare too, so residuals are pretty good...

Ps. i thought the engine was 190bhp.. where did you find your 170bhp figure?

I got the 170 figure from a book published in the 1980's. It was the same engine as intthe regualar BMW's.The chassis could take more power, but they didnt give it the power.
The whole idea of the car was to probide fun, not blinding speed. And the price was high to dissuade buyers who werent "sufficiently motivated".

I especially like the doors:D

I especially like the doors :D

I know that this is now an old subject, but i've just joined here, 170 was about right, I've just taken mine up to around 290 which is far far more respectable and one hell of alot more fun to drive, just for info the handleing characteristics are incredible it's like driving a go-cart.

Does anyone else here have one?

0-60 comes out at about 4.6 seconds dead on and i've had 159 out of it although the whole top speed thing is a litle fuzzy, things get strange after 130 as i changed all the underbody aerodynamics with an exhaust change, the standard tail box was also a 50 lb rear fin, great design but very restrictive.

how did you get the hp up to 290? is it an aluminum block like the Z's have today?

0-60 in 4.6! wow! is it comparatively easy to launch with 290bhp through the rear wheels or do you get much traction trouble? does the z1 have traction control i dont have a clue

Nope no traction control, but yeah you do have to be quite careful with the power, however the Z1 is not particually light (even with a composite body shell) so it's no real problem.

I see...

i cant help but noticing that you also own a '94 911 RS. that would be a 964, as the 993 RS came out in '95, if im not mistaken?
Amazing car... i would love to own one but could never afford it.. not for a few years anyway...

cheers,
jay

Can you post some pics, a 290hp Z1 would be awesome to see!

And its very unique, better than the legions of Z3 (not a bad car, just common and very poseur-ish)

Yeah sorry I've notbeen around in a while, but this was it standard.

Then after alot of work, though i've tried to keep it looking relatively standard (except for under the bonnet and car)

I'll post under the bonnet once my camera's fixed.

I thought the Z1 would look like a M1. Looks like an older Elise

dont see any resemblence to an Elise whatsoever

OLDER ELISE

Chris

still, the elise has a short hood/longish deck (being mid engine and all), and this has typical roadster proportions (long hood, short deck)

I think it looks like an older elise.
