CF Hood Clear coat

I got quoted from the same shop that's doing the frame around $150 to sand and clear coat the CF hood. Is that a good price? They said they've never redone one before. Either just installed them or painted to match car. Good deal, or should I get more prices?

Sounds a bit high, you might want to get another quote to compare.

$150 to sand AND clear the hood? If they pay for the clear, that's a damn good price. Exactly what kind of sanding are they gonna do, are they gonna sand past the original "clear" and re-apply a new coat or are they just gonna scuff and spray over top of the existing one? Either way that's a pretty good deal granted they pay for the clear, just the labor on that would be more than $150 at any reputable shop.

My guess is they will just give the hood a good wet sand. It wont take that much clear to spray a few coats on it.

Ya they said wet sand the entire hood down and apply the coat then. Will ask about it again later, IF they finish my car today.

What's wrong with your hood that you want it re-cleared?

Got a used CF hood. The clear coat is coming off along the drivers side, like peeling off and it's a good amount. If the front end is being rebuilt, I want the hood looking good too.

Is it an actual clear coat or is it a clear gel coating used to set-up the CF? If it's actual clear coat you'll be able to save it, but sanding down that gel shit sometimes causes more problems than you fix, but it'd be hard to tell without seeing it in person.

I can peel it right off. The actual clear 'plastic' or whatever is over the actual CF is still there. It's just the very very top thin piece. I'll try to get a good pic of it later.

I didn't know the hood needed to be fixed first. I assumed it was in good shape and just needed more protection. That price might not be to bad.

Is it a VIS hood? Because all there hoods seem to have a problem with clear coat. Whenever I get one (not sure which brand) I'm gonna put like 5 coats of hardcore wax on it as soon as I put it on.

It sounds like a good price to me...I'd pay it if I needed this done.

I know they all come off. I'm going to bring it in to the same shop that did the front and see what they say again. Actually bring the hood in and have them check it out.

Its not the epoxy resin that holds the CF together is it?

That won't help anything. It'll just make the water run off of it like a cheetah.

That's what I was getting at.
Dave, if you can pull off "chunks", then it's probably not clearcoat, clearcoat is less than paper thin and doesn't really flake unless it's a REALLY REALLY shitty job.

I have seen clear being able to peel off. It is really thin but if the hood wasn't prept right it is possible. You just need to take it in and let them see it. They will be able to tell you if its repairable or not.

Well what could I possibly do then? I don't want to spend $500 on a hood and in a year it be shit. Is do-do clear coat just the nature of the beast with wet carbon fiber? Or is it just the VIS name brand? I know somebody has got to make a carbon fiber hood that will hold up. Thanks for any help because this subject has been bugging me for a while.

Hey watch your fuckin language or I will ban stick your ass.
I hope you didnt pay much for it if its the epoxy coming off, that may not be a cheap fix.

It is the paper thin piece coming off. It's like clear sheet peeling off the hood. Like when there's a thin film on a screen of something... that's what it looks like.

To the best of my knowledge, VIS is one of the best CF hoods you can get. The reason they crack/peel/chip is usually from not keeping it up and also letting it sit in the hot ass sun all day, every day. People who park outside have much more problems than people who park inside, and if you keep it clean and keep wax on it, it should hold up, but putting 5 coats of wax on at one time won't do anymore than just 1 coat of wax.
David, that sounds like it's clear pealing off then. What brand is it? Is it a cheap aftermarket brand that had been previously cleared? IIRC, most of the expensive hoods don't have a clear on them, they come out of the factory "shiny" because of the expoxy, but I think some of those cheap hoods use some cheaper epoxies so they need to spray a layer of clear on it to make it look nice and shiny. Having the bodyshop sand it down and re-clear it will work, maybe for a year, maybe for 5 years, but I doubt it's a permanent fix.

Here's a ok pic of the sealing

Seems easy enough to take it in and get redone.

 ! Thats good dude. I was joking on the ban stick thing too BTW, after rereading it I sounded pretty serious and showed no indication of joking.
Yeah Dave, that looks to me like a clear coat of sorts. I was worried that when the layer was peeling off you were left with bare carbon weave and that wouldnt have been good. I would just take it down and see what they say. Maybe call the manufacturer?

That's right on the money. Even though my ViS Invader hood sat under the Cali sun all day for about an entire year, I never ever got any peeling or cracks, but I used to wax it with all sorts of stuff religiously every 3 weeks. I think if you take care of them they can last a pretty darn long time.
