To buy or not to buy?

So, my friend/neighbor is selling his mx6, '91 or '92, I think, 222k miles, 5spd, 12 valve 2.2 i4, new brakes, timing belt, and other small stuff. I'm just asking here, because, well, he only wants $400 for it, but all the miles, and it does blow lots of blue smoke (I know, but it could just be some valve seals) on startup, but after that runs nice, with no smoke. So, would I be likely to have reliable transportation for at least a few months or more? Or would I be pissed in a week when something major gives way? Long post made short: How long do these motors typically remain reliable?

Hmm, I've found that this is the same engine from the b2200, which I've heard to be an extremely reliable vehicle (commonly go to 300k miles or more?). But I'd still like to hear some opinions from people, either way.

i would make sure to check every little possibility out. even with the reliability of that being able to go 300k w/o rebuild you still wanna check everything. i missed one thing when i checked my 2nd gen (coolant) and it was on the side of the road before i even got it home the day i bought it.

with reliability as the issue you want to be sure of everything. if its been well taken care of then yes it should go for up to that 300k, but if its been mistreated at any time in its life, you might be "getting what you pay for"

there are a few people still modding these cars at mx6.com that have over 200k and every thing seems fine for them. i would say buy the car and a new/used head install it on the car and be happy for the good deal you just got
