2004 Rodeo Stalls Randomly

We have a 2004 Rodeo with the 3.5 liter V6, 2-wheel drive - 39k miles.

It has stalled ramdomly about 5 times in the past few months.
It happens when slowing down to a stop, for example. It starts right back up again no problem.
No CELs, plenty of gas.

Starts easily, no rough idle, no warnings.

I've read about older Rodeos with CELs and fuel sending units. I don't think that applies...

Any words of advice? Things to check? I'm very car savvy, just not familiar with the quirks of my wife's Rodeo.

Thanks,

Mark

Intake manifold gasket.

I experienced random stalling with my Rodeo for a long time. After replacing IMG gasket I still had the occasional shut down. The problem became bad enough I finally took it in for service and was told my fuel pressure relay was intermittenly failing. $15 for the part and a lot more for diagnosing time. The good news is that I have been shutdown free for awhile now.

thanks

Yeah, it was the relay. It failed intermittenly and had me scratchin' my head for a while. It makes me wonder if there is way to test those relays or perhaps replace them all after a while.

sure you can test them. look on the top of the relay, and it will show the circuit diagram of the internals of the relay and the pins so you could test it applying voltage and measuring if the contacts close. but with intermittent....well, you know.
these oem relays seem to last forever mostly, so i wouldn't replace unless needed.

Well, interstingly enough I haven't done anything yet about the problem but after driving the car a bit more, I have noticed the idle is very low, and it finally threw a CEL - which according to the code - is a misaligned or low voltage MAP sensor.

Anyone had MAP sensor trouble? That thing looks very integrated into the throttle body...

Thanks!

I haven't seen an 04 under the hood but usually MAP sensors are located in the upper intake manifold or even remotely mounted with a vacuum line going back to the intake.

To test a MAP sensor you need a vacuum pump, a volt meter and the know-how specs for the MAP sensor.

Yeah the MAP sensor is located right at the end of the intake tract before entering the intake manifold.

This car is a drive by wire (as I'm sure you all know), so the idle is controlled by some electronic idle controller I'm sure.

Any experience with the MAP sensor being out of whack and affecting idle (in this case lowering it)?
