Hello to all,

I have to get my 89' Camry ( 4 cylinder ) smog checked this year in order to regrister it. I was wondering.... not that I want too but my car has about 220K on it and I never had the catalyltic converter changed. Does anyone know how much I'll need to spend if it fails the test this time??? I don't expect it to since it's never failed BUT one never knows.

Thank you,

You can probably get an aftermarket converter at an independent muffler shop for around $150-$200. That said, I wouldn't worry about it. Most converters fail due to some other engine malfunction that sends an improper fuel mixture through the exhaust system. It's usually an excessively rich mixture that causes converter failure. Keep your engine running properly and a converter failure is unlikely. That means if a check engine light comes on or a cylinder is missfiring, deal with it quickly. Don't just continue to drive the car because you don't notice any obvious change in drivability.

Mike,

Thanks for the reply. This weekend I intend to get it checked. I won't worry about the cat replacement. So far my engine runs fine.

Mike,

Today I had my Camry smoged checked and passed with flying colors! Very happy camper here. It goes to show everyone that the Toyota cats last a long time.

Have a good holiday.
