ok guys,

i have been workin on fixin it, i just cant find the problem, and my inspection needs to be done within a week.

i have a 2001 Solara and a 1997 camry both of which with this code.

On the solara, i removed the egr itself with the metal pipe and cleaned it out and pushed up on that diaphram and it was moving up n down ok.

i then put it on the car, and didn't really feel the diaphram moving up n down with the car running. I gave it some RPMs, and still nothing. When i pushed ut up with my hands while the car was running, it shut the car off.

ANY HELP here???? what does it mean??

Read the second post in this thread then the Autoshop101 link at the bottom: http://www.obd-codes.com/forums/742-obd-codes-97-toyota-camry-p0401--suggestions-please.html

Also the Camry faqs thread at the top of this forum has troubleshooting info for P0401. The Factory Service Manual thread at the top of the forum has your factory manual waiting for you. It should have test/replacement procedures for all your EGR components.

I had the P0401 code on my 2000 camry le v6. I cleared the code and checked my gas cap, sure enough it was loose and tightened the cap, and the code has not come back. If your gas cap is not loose, Id try replacing the cap with a dealer gas cap. Cant cost to much.

Your code did not return because you cleared it, not because you tightened your gas cap. The only code that would indicate a loose or non-sealing gas cap is a P0440 code. See the link in post #3. Loosen your gas cap and see what code you get.
