Jeep GC Laredo 98 transfer case leaking

The case leaks pretty bad. I was told that happens when it is not used and the gasket drys out. I was told by a shop that works on all my cars that the gasket is silicone and to fix the problem you have to drop the case and take it apart to replace the gasket with new silicone.
Is there any way to slow down the leak or stop it? I have used products in the past for leaking caskets and actually have had success http://www.seallube.com/ These products are far better than what you find in the auto parts stores.
If I tighten up the case screws will that help?
To do the replacement it costs $800 big ones...ouch!

Any ideas would be appreciated. I was even thinking of doing a duct tape it to death fix. :)

I worked on the problem and cleaned the whole area off to find that is was leaking...not bad around one bolt at the rear of the transfer case that is right above the rear motor mount or should it be called tail mount.
I found some sealer at the hardware store that is suppose to work on gas tanks etc.. I cleaned all the metal with alchoal and then applied this to stuff to the area around the bolt...the case looked like it had a small piece missing from the metal but who knows when that happened. It setup in about 5 minutes and then hardens after about 8 hrs....it is still flexable but seems to be holding. Since there is no pressure it will probable work.
Sure beats $800 to take it apart to replace a gasket.....they could have done that and I bet it still would have leaked since the small missing piece would not even have been noticed.
Hope that helps someone.
Anyone know what the rear tail mouter mount looks like? I wonder if it is good or bad...hard to tell unless I had a picture of a new one.
If you got a pic send it to me.

Thanks

mine transfer case was leaking slightly so i put some transmission treatment into it and some sealer and then i coated the entire outside of the transfer case where the two halves of the case are bolted together with some silver gasket sealer believe or not and it hasn't leaked a drop since then and i did this when there was 100,000 miles on my 98 laredo and now it has 149,000 and i have had no problems.

I have used gasket or tansmission antileak but these are silicon gaskets and therefore do not swell form those chemicals. There is a great series of products out at seallube.com but even they said there product would not work on silicon gaskets. I did what you did was to use a product on the outside.
Sure is way to save a ton of money.
I do not understand why Jeep didn't use a fiber gasket with silicon sealer on both side...at least then you might have a chance of using one of these chemicals.

PS: I used the seallube on a rear engine seal and it worked great!

the seallube worked on a rear engine seal??? thats great to know because my neighbor has a leak in her rear engine seal on her eclipse and i've been just putting in leak fix but i have to put it in every 2 months i'm going to try that stuff.

yeah i don't get it either. i mean i have 2 grand cherokees and both the transfers cases leak and i have successfully slowed them down to a SLOW leak but there is no way i can get them to stop. and i see this on other grand cherokees too even the new ones. i'm not going to pay between $1000-$2000 for a new one when the thing is almost 10 years old. basically i have to add some fluid to it like once a year now and thats something that i can deal with it until the thing dies.
