Hey James
Why would you need to remove the distributor to set the timing? Assuming that you do, once you have the bolt out, mark the position of the dist base and the rotor, just pick up on it while rotating it back and forth slightly. Sometimes on a high mileage engine the carbon and varnish will have it stuck pretty good and you`ll have to keep pushing it down/pulling it up/rotating it till you cut the carbon loose. When you reassemble it sometimes the oil pump drive wont line up just right and you`ll have to rotate the engine slightly while holding down on the dist. In 83 Ford used the Dura Spark 2 with EEC system on some trucks. The timing was not adjustable at the dist. You installed the dist with the static timing at TDC and the EEC computer adjusted the timing, the computer was located under the drivers seat i think. This system used a crank trigger pulse generator, and the only wires going to the dist were plug and coil wires. The dist hold down bolt went thru a notch on the base and the dist couldnt even be moved unless the bolt was removed. If you have this system and you are having timing problems its probably a sensor, the EEC unit, or cam chain.
