I have a 91' lumina with a 3.1. I bought it from a friend where it sat for about 2 years. We put a battery in it and it ran fine for about 2 months. As i was leaving work one day out of the blue I turned a corner and accelerated and it died. I managed to limp it close to home and called my brother to come tow it the rest of the way home. He showed up about an hour later and it started right up. But everytime i would accelerate hard it would die. So i accelerated lightly to get it home. At this point it would idle but as soon as it was put in drive and you touched the accelerator it would die or bog down as soon as i accelerated. (some past history.... the low coolant light was on when my friend stopped driving it and when i got it it was also on then too but not low on coolant). The check engine light was on so we pulled a code and pulled a bad map sensor code 34 if i remember correctly. We replaced the map sensor and fuel filter at this time still no improvement. Also my brother had had a few luminas and suggested a vacuum leak so we traced everything and found a rubber vacuum line was split at a connection and fixed that. (no help) By this time it would not even start and if it did start it idled rough and would die upon any type of acceleration. So we then dropped the gas tank and replaced the fuel pump. After doing this it ran fine for a little while 10-15 min. (a little rough) then it went right back to doing what it was doing. It would die or bog down on acceleration. If you can catch it when its stumbling it will idle but as soon as you are driving at a steady speed it gets real rough and dies. (we drove it around the block a few times and as soon as you get to a steady speed it hesitates stumbles and dies.) We did find that one of the plug wires wasn't connected to the plug and fixed that so it idles smoother but still does the same thing. We are out of options and $$$$. If i cant find an easy fix the car is going to the place where all dead cars go.

You said you fixed a plug wire that was'nt connected, that plug may be fouled out from not firing. If you have'nt done so install new plugs and wires before giving up on your ride. The condition of the old plugs may also give a clue as to your loss of power.

Welcome to AF eja1980

Pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator and see if there is fuel present. If there is, then your FPR needs to be replaced. Also inspect the wiring from the CKPS (CranK Position Sensor) to the ICM (Ignition Control Module) to see if it is melted, pinched, rubbed through, frayed, etc...) as it runs near many hot and moving parts under the hood (CV axle, exhaust manifold, harmonic balancer, etc...). Good luck.

I will try both suggestions as time permits and let you both know the results as soon as i get some. Thanks for the suggestions. eja1980
