95 JGC Electrical issuesKyferEz 08-08-2007, 02:16 PM I've got several problems, so I'll outline them, separating with #s. The first two are the most important issues to fix for me. 1) Fuel pump not getting power sometimes. I am fairly certain it is related to a loose connection in the fuse box, as fiddling with the fuses will make it work again (none of the fuses are ever blown). Unfortunately, I haven't been able to identify WHICH fuse is for the fuel pump?!? I've got a chilton manual, but it doesn't list the fuel pump in the fuses! 2) The door locks. They unlock ok. The refuse to lock from either door. It's not a wire issue in the door, as I traced the wires to their relays under the glove box. The relays are fine. Here are the diagnostics so far: a. The relays DO get the 12v signal from the lock button b. if I manually trigger the relay with 12v and ground, the doors will lock c. One of the wires connected to the coil of the relay, colored yellow with black stripe, does not connect to ground, so the relay never triggers. If i connect the wire directly to ground, everything works. However, it appears this Yel/blk wire isn't meant to go directly to ground, as it travels under the dash, over to the center console, and there I loose it. If anyone has schematics of the door lock system, I'd love to see them! 3) The alarm goes off when I unlock the drivers door occasionally. Why is it happening? Is there a sensor going bad in the door? I don't want to simply disable the alarm... 4) If anyone can email me the complete schematics for a 95 JGC, I'd be VERY grateful. I've tried to buy a book from Jeep dealership, but they apparently don't want to sell it to me as I can never get them to order it. I don't want schematics from a Haynes or Chilton book - they are very incomplete and often inaccurate. If Alldata or similar actually has compete schematics, I'd take them, but I've been told they don't, otherwise I'd buy access to their site and get them myself. Thank you very much for all you help!!! Travis JeepinHank 08-08-2007, 02:57 PM Best manual you can buy is the DCX factory service manual. Check out www.techauthority.com (http://www.techauthority.com) for the manuals. The 95 ZJ looks to be about $60. Well worth it IMO. If for nothing but your wiring issues. (great wiring diagrams for almost everything) Fuel pump failures are common on Grand Cherokees. You should be able to hear it prime when the key is switched to "on". Not sure on the fuse, but I believe it is a mini fuse, in the power distribution center under the hood. Door lock actuators are also frequent failures - but it sounds like you are tracing that problem to another culprit. HTH KyferEz 08-08-2007, 06:16 PM Thanks Hank. Keeping to my numbering scheme: 1. I checked the wiring when the fuel pump wasn't working; it's definitely electrical and not the pump. The +12v line has zip zilch nada voltage on it when the problem occurs. The power distribution center under the hood lists a relay but not a fuse for the fuel pump. 2. Yes, the door actuators, wiring to the doors, and relays all work fine. It's a different, less common wiring/electrical problem. 3. ...nothing further yet 4. Thanks for the link, I'll give it a go. Travis bringselpup 08-08-2007, 06:30 PM Spend a little time here on the board, you might change your tune regarding #3. The official Factory Service Manual is the ultimate resource you can lay your hands on. It will have more wiring diagrams than you can imagine. Keep a lookout on Ebay, I bought a pristine 93 FSM for $17.95 KyferEz 08-08-2007, 06:46 PM Spend a little time here on the board, you might change your tune regarding #3. Does the factory alarm make it hard to install an aftermarket system (which I'm considering doing)? What's the *best* way to disable it - I've seen several browsing around. 4. The factory service manual can still be ordered from the dealer too... It's just they don't seem to want to sell it to me grrr. Isn't the manual sold at tech authority a factory service man? If not, I may just have to go over the heads of the manager at the service dept at my local dealer. Also, I don't have time to wait around for it to show up on eBay. I need to get it fixed and the dash put back together. Thanks KyferEz 08-08-2007, 07:23 PM 4. Is a 94 JGC Factory service manual close enough? What about a 96? Both of those are on ebay right now. JeepinHank 08-09-2007, 02:54 PM A lot of changes were made from 95 to 96. So if you're set on buying one from Ebay, get the 94. Yes - the ones on the Tech authority website are the bona fide DCX / Jeep Factory Service Manual. On your fuel pump, there is a fuse for the fuel pump relay, although I can't remember which one right off. I seem to remember it having to do with a safety cut-off. Either way, your problem doesn't sound like a fuse unless its just loose or something. Good luck. KyferEz 08-09-2007, 04:18 PM 1. I think it is a loose fuse. There are a number of fuses that are sort-of loose in the fuse box in the dash, plus some owner before me used some of those fuse taps on a couple which are jammed in and I can't even remove the fuses with pliers - feels like I'm going to break the fuse box. Fortunately they've never blown!. Didn't think to mention all that before... I guess I'll just have to hook up a multimeter to the fuel pump and pull a fuse at a time until voltage disappears. 2. ... 3. ... 4. I ordered the manual from Tech Authority. Hopefully I can figure out where that yellow/black wire from #2 goes now. Thanks guys! bringselpup 08-09-2007, 08:43 PM If you couldn't get a hold of a 95 FSM off Ebay getting the tech authority manual was probably best. Especially with an electrical gremlin like you have. No fun if you were chasing something from another years manual only to find out it's one of the small changes from year to year. My comment on the alarm was that I think you're gonna wind up wanting to disable it. You may not actually do it but I think more often than not you'll be cussin that thing. Just seems to me anyway there's a LOT of posts and a lot of people go through hell because of it's existence. KyferEz 08-30-2007, 12:18 PM I wanted to update everyone on these problems (in case anyone else ever has the problem). I got the 95 JGC manual in, studied the wiring diagrams for quite some time... 1) I believe I had a short. I found a small piece of wire that the insulation was worn off of near the fuel pump. 2) The wire I couldn't find where it went to: It went to the chime module. The chime module is connected to signals from the ignition, lights, etc., and is made with a ground inhibitor. Basically the ground inhibitor activates whenever you leave the keys in the ignition or the lights on, and that causes the door-locks to be unable to lock. My chime module contacts were dirty. I removed the module, reinstalled it, and presto! Now the doors lock and unlock! 3) Yes, it's a switch going bad. Still trying to determine the *Best* method to disable the alarm. 4) I will help anyone who needs help with a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee wiring, seeing as I have this hugh manual and not much use for it now. (No, I'm not looking to sell it - I'm going to keep it). Thanks to everyone for their help, KyferEz KyferEz 08-30-2007, 01:31 PM One other thing: the chime module is underneath the far left of the dash. It is red, and can be seen and accessed without removing anything. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
