Dear Auto Experts

My employer has a 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan. He's had it parked for the last couple of years and neglected to start it in all that time. I've had to boost it and once power is restored, lights start flashing, horn starts honking. I can start it but the engine shuts down every time. Is this something simple like old oil or something more complicated like an immobilizer no one knows about. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx

Denny

Is battery fully charged? Maybe start with a good battery, poor battery and connections can cause many problems.

Check fuel pressure
What engine is it?

The more info you can give us helps everyone help you.
Were there any problems with engine when parked?

this might be a silly question, but do the keys for that model have a microchip in them? Are you using the Valet Key to start it? If so...you'll need to get one of the keys with the chip in it. The Valet Key only unlocks it. (not really sure what a Valet would do with a key like that, but that's what they call it, anyway...)

I'm not an expert, but I might help.

Your problem could be a number of issues or as few as one.

First of all, 2 years is plenty long enough for gas to go bad. If it's not in your realm to drop the tank and drain it, I would by all means fill it up with a high grade, or high test gasoline. An addition of gas drier to the tank might help also.

If the battery has been dead for a long time then the on board computers have all reset. To get them to properly set, the van must have a properly charged battery, and the van must be started and driven for a while at highway speeds.

These are relatively simple steps, try them first before you start throwing parts at it.

You might just luck out.

Ron
