2002 Porsche 996 Engine failures

Today for the second time since I purchased my 2002 996 Carrera car I have been informed by my local Porsche dealer that my engine has failed and that it must be replaced. I have also learned from the mechanics that at this one dealership they have already replaced 8 engines in the past few months. This is clearly not an isolated problem. Has anyone had similar problems or is aware of any information in this regards. In both cases the engine overheated and lost oil pressure, with oil leakage resulting.

maybe because your engines werent broken in properly? I read european cars yearly test porsche turrbo had to have their motor replaced after only 6500 miles, but judging that its a whole bunch of journalists driving the car, they beat the shit out of it , i bet my balls they didnt bother braking the engine in they just gun it, porobably not even warm it up either, but look man you have a warannte right so dont werry the engine aint going to cost a penny :) , xcept the labor , unless porches warantee cover that too

Porsche has had plenty of complete engine failures, they have been kept hush hush but more and more reports are starting to come out. The engines dont break in properly and have a ton of blow by, as well as complete motor lock ups. Not a good thing. At least they are replacing them which is good. the other thing is that these cars are so complicated and have so much electronics running through them that 95% of the techs out there at the dealers dont even know how to diagnose problems. They can drop an engine out and put the new one in but can they disassymble one of the new motors and reassymble them, most will tell you them selves that they cant. Porsche customer service is also lacking, they need to really get on the ball and take care of customers and have better quality control on engines and other electonic parts on the cars. There have also been bad instrument clusters, bad oxygen sensors, broken factory shifter levers, and more.

First case I have ever heard of it- even in Europe I haven't heard of such as thing- but Porsche engines NEED knocking in- Porsche usually have the most reliable engines you can buy if you knock them in properly. As long as your engine is being replaced for fre you needn't worry:smile:

:mad: i recently purchased a 996, a beautiful car. the delivery date was moved back a week because the top mechanism failed. the first time i put gas into the car it spit back at me this happen over and over again and the gas gauge did not seem to be reading correctly.
i took it to the dealership and they returned it, "everything is fine"
four days later the engine stopped in the middle of the freeway at 75 mph. i pushed it off the freeway....it was flatbeded to the dealership.
the fuel gauge said there was 1/4 tank left. the s.m. claimed the relay fuse had blown. i said that the gas gauge and filling the fuel tank were not working. they tested everything and said it was fine. the car was flatbeded back to me. four days later the car was impossible to get gas into and the gauge was reading incorrectly, the dealership flatbedded the car again where it stayed for ten days. the sm and porsche dm claimed the car was fine. they tried to convince me that when the fuel tank reserve light went on there was still six gallons in the fuel tank. i asked them to put it in writing with their signatures since the owner's manual said there was only 2.6 gallons. they did not respond to my request but no longer suggested that the reserve light meant there was six gallons in the tank. when they insisted i take the car back, the dealership where i bought the car asked to check it out. i have not seen the car since june 30th. i have owned the car for nearly three months and have not seen the car for nearly half that time. i treated the car like a "gem..." warming it before i drove it, not driving it too fast.....
i am furious with the way the dealers and s.m. and d.m. have treated me and this problem. yes, the car is under warrantly....but i have spent hours and hours screwing around with this problem car. this has been a living nightmare. today, is july 28 nearly 30 days since i have not seen the car. they now admit something is wrong with the car but they are not sure what it is , when it will be fixed, when i will have the car....yet, they faxed me a release form giving me two credits on two months payment and i still don't know wha tis wrong with the car. how stupid is this picture. hush hush, i read on one of the posts? i am going to tell the world about this fiasco and the non porsche treatment i have received. i can buy a kia, save a lot money, if i want to get treated this badly!

Maybe you should report this under the state Lemon Law and just get a new car. I think the owner's manual has state by state notices in it about this law but it's been since 2002 since I looked at the book. The only problem I've had is apparently "normal" power surges at ~3200rpm in first>second gears (I posted about this in the 996 board)

this is off the topic but im soo envious of you guys being able to afford a 996! Thats my dream car, besides the new GT3. Well I was wondering what you guys do for a living. Im only 17 now so i got a while to go before i can start saving money for one.

Sounds like your dealer really sucks, my father and all his friends from PCA have theirs serviced at Silver Star in Roslyn, NY and have nothing but high ratings for them. The techs are not allowed to disassembe the engine, it has to go back to Germany for disassembly and diagnosis of the reason for failure. Dads Boxster was low about a half a qt of anti-freeze and there were no sign of leakage so they air-freighted and engine and transmission in overnight from CA and added 24 months to the existing warranty. I think you guys need to get involved with PCA and do some networking and find the good reliable dealers in your area to take your cars to. Proper break in is essential to any engine no matter what people tell you, Porsche does have a recommended procudure in the manual, you did read it didn't you?? Good luck and spend the 440 to join your regional PCA group.

FYI, I'm not one of these little snot nose kids who have no clue, I'm 44 and dads 70, and participates in all of their DE events.

Why does it not surprise me how these dealers treat customers. Customer service at dealerships around the country has been dropping every year. All they want to do is sell you the car and thats it. It's like they really dont care. Most Porsche owners take their cars to specialty shops or someone they know because they have gotten tired of the crappy dealer treatment. Place's like AutoThority in Va, 911 Enterprises in TX, CEC Techart USA, and a few select others know how to take care of customers and help them out. Many of the tech's at the dealers dont even know how to diagnose problems with these new cars. And of course all they go by is what the Porsche Systems Tester diagnosis tool tells them. Many of them cant diagnose past that. Just a few years back the techs had to actually do some hard thinking and testing to diagnose a problem and tell you what the problem is. Now a days, with technology as great as it is suppose to be they cant figure out why a car keeps going low on coolant, so they just pull the entire engine out and give you a new one. At this rate a car manufacturer will go broke after a few years. I have been in the automotive Porsche aftermarket business for over 6 years now and I could write a book about what I have seen and heard from customers. I think I would call it " My experience at the dealer. "

I own a 2003 Porsche 996 (purchased in November 0f 2002) and recently had the engine replaced for the second time. The first time the engine just froze while driving a winding road, and the second was the result of the check engine light coming on and Porsche decidng to replace the engine. I don't want the car and all Porsche is willing to offer is to give me a voucher for the purchase of a new vehicle at dealer cost. Has anyone had any similar problems and resolution from Porsche?

my check engine light on my brand new 996 came on the other day i fixed it rather easily i drove the shitbox into a river best thing i ever did i went out and bought a brand new pontiac aztec lowered with some bichin 24 inch wheels its ugly but better than a porsche

My 1999 porsche 996 c2 trip, has just "blown" its engine. It was serviced from new at one of the Porsche centres here (stratstone wilmslow) and after the last service (end of May 2004) having covered 30,000 miles from new it went up in white smoke. The Porsche centre is unwilling to find out the caue of the problem and wishes to replace the engine at 10,000 +++. Porsche unwilling to help. Can anyone tell me how to go about this especially the bill

what i need to know is

1. The reg of car and date of first reg so that we are not acused of making up the numbers

2. The mileage and how many years old the car was when it failed.

3. What the technical problem that caused the failure eg cylinder cracked

4. How much it cost you

5. offers and time scale from Porsche eg i was first offered 0 by Porsche GB the 800 a week later

6 If you had to fist pay for the technical inspection

hello all. porsche technicion here. i know all of you are pissed about the insane amount of engine replacements. yes it does suck but you have to understand porsche is the only car line that is still owned by porsche and no one else so they dont have the money as the bigger car lines. porsche is a stubborn car company and it takes a miracle to get them to change a design. i have replaced many engines failing from the same problem and the only thing porsche wants us to do is remove the complete engine and ship it back to germany so they can examine it. they are trying but they are breaking faster than they can fix them. the problem they have been having on earlier 996"s and boxsters is the engine casting was poorly made and some vehicles where experiencing cylinder sleeves breaking loose from the block causing the engine to explode itself and lockup rendering it only good for a boat anchor. they managed to get that solved. the other common problem was the intermediate shaft bearing (located on the flywheel side of engine under the crankshaft) was failing. you would here a grinding noise for a while until the bearing couldnt handle it anymore and the engine would die. this caused damage to internal parts and the block was being filed away when there was no more bearing left. it sucks but they are replacing engines until they can come up with a fix. they probably already found one and it is being applied to the replacement engine. there is no way to determine which vehicle will have the concerns.

I have a 1985 911 I got from the factory at 17K miles and now has 155K on it.

Good engine using one quart/1200 miles. Never opened.

Transmission is another issue. Major overhaul three times. When clutch was replaced it was dated 1986 so Porsche must have replaced it before I did.

Reading the posts here is SCARY even if I were a doctor !!!

Its a common problem in 996 and boxster engines in the uk. Its the liners that lift on them, boom, its dead. but porsche will not admit that they have a problem. Its the same fault the 7 series BMW's had in the early 90's, but they agreed they had a problem and kept there reputation. If porsche don't admit this there gonna be in the s**t.

The 996 Turbo uses a racing-derived engine. It uses dry-sump lubrication and they don't suffer from RMS (rear main seal) leaks like the regular 996, Boxster, and now 997 models do.

My engine also suddenly failed on my Porsche 911 2002 (always well maintained), i am out warranty now (48,000 miles). Some of you in this threads mentioned that Porsche was aware of this failure and was replacing engines.
A few questions I have:
Is it an acknowledged problem by Porsche and are they ready to take on the cost? Has anyone here gone through this experience and got Porsche to help.

Thanks for any insights.

Does anyone else experienced RMS or other engine, cooling issue on 996 or Boxster? How about transmission, battery, spoiler? I would like to know how badly spread problems these are, because I had them all and very frustrated.

engine's on the 996 were prone to failure because it was the first wet sump motors in the 911. they didnt design it properly, and when using the car too much, it puts wear and tear on it, causing the total failure of the engine. porsche's way of fixing this problem is replacing the motor. however when done the dealers are supposed to use new motors, some however, are lazy and just install used motors. it's also the reason that 996's are cheap compared even to a 993. that and 996's are incredibly common.

this is y the 996 turbo's and gt3's have good motors, they used race derived motors, therefor used dry sump, something porsche knows very well

last thursday lost the engine to a 2004 c4s with 56,500 miles. it quietly lost power and subsequently would not turn over. no warnings on the dash signals prior to the failure. no leaking immediately, but over time lost much of it's oil.
purchased new (single owner) and serviced on schedule. never tracked. used for commuting. pepe porsche of white plains, ny explained it was the shaft connecting the engine and the transmission, so i'm not sure it's the intermediate shaft bolt referred to in many comments above (but i presume it is).
based on what seems to be a statistically relevant number of engine failures of same sort, i'd say we have a trend.

My 2004 Porshe 996 with only 20K mi. failed yesterday. Dealer says they will have to replace the engine but Porsche requires them to run a computer diagnostic before they will decide on any financial assistance. I have not been informed as to the cause of the failure but it was preceded by loud metal clanking sounds followed by a check engine light and a drive to repair facility warning. Didn't make it the mile to my house before all the warning lights came on and the car lost all power. Is there any class action suit on this? Is there any recourse if Porsche does not offer to pay?

Same thing happened to my 98 boxster. This a widespread problem for the 97-98 years with some failures into 99. The engines failed because the cyl bores were not true so they stuck liners in. These were prone to popping out which resulted in catastrophic engine failure. This happened to my 98 boxster at 34k miles while driving along at 45mph w no warning. The Porsche dealer did disassemble the engine here. I had an aftermarket warranty which covered the disassembly and replacement w a used 98 engine (6k). I kept calling the dealer and regional manager everyday until they agreed to kick in 5k towards a new engine. I was out of pocket 1.5k which was ok since the new engine supposedly wouldn't have the problem. Yet I had no way of knowing if the new engine had the liners and this bugged me enough that traded the car in for a g35 infinity - a great car that has had zero problems with 90k on the clock. A friend had a 99 boxster with 80k who had the same problem so it was not just low mileage engines as has been commonly reported. I was thinking of getting a 996 but this thread is convincing me not to. I had been told the 996 cars were better than the boxsters and had better engines. sorry to hear this isn't true...
