Escort Revving like mad when clutch is dipped

I have a 1998 Escort 1.8 Zetec. When I dip the clutch the revs go up like crazy, especially in 1st gear or when stood at lights.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Apparntly, the AIC valve is a likely candidate. Where abouts would I find this on the car to clean it?

I would certainly suspect the IAC valve. I am not certain about the 98 model, but the IAC should be located where the large air intake hose connects to the intake manifold... usually about the size of a couple D cell batteries.

Follow that large black tube toward the back side... look for the IAC which looks like this picture:

You will also be able to find it by following your throttle cable.

Hi

thanks for that, I have seen a pic of the aic before but there is nothing that seems to look like it.

Follow the throttle cable to the throttle body ... now look on the opposite side (away from the cable hook-up) ... that's the throttle-position-sensor. Now go back a half-circle ... don't know which way, but probably away from the engine block ... you should find the IAC valve. May have a plastic cover. May not have a vacuum hook-up ... depends on application. Will have an electric connection.
