Buying a new car

Hey folks, I've just been reading around and I think it's time I actually in.

I'm thinking of buying a '98 Civic LX for $4,000. It's got 134k miles on it and the body/interior looks pretty good. He's apparently had oil changes every 5k miles and he bought it when it was at 50k miles which would make me the third owner if I were to buy it. It's had the following done to it:

60,000 Mile Tires put on at 129,000 miles.
Timing Belt, Water Pump, Belts - All replaced on 26-July-2006
Muffler and Muffler pipes replaced at 100,000 miles

The July 26, 2006 would make it at the ~125k mile mark. It's a manual and has had the fluid replaced at 115k miles. I'm wondering what kind of deal I'm getting out of this. Thanks for all the help!

All you have to do in the future is go to nada.com and put in the car's information.

What do you mean by "pretty good"? The condition of the car makes a large difference. And not that it matters too much, but you didn't specify whether it had air conditioning or the number of doors (but I found out that the car only comes as a 4 door, so no big deal). Look below for nada's quote. And read the descriptions for each of the values to find out which one applies to this car.

An interesting sidenote is that having the manual transmission actually decreases the value for the car. Weird. I always thought that made them more valuable.

Low Retail Value: $3500

Clean Retail Value: $4575

High Retail Value: $5325 (Since you said it only looks "pretty good" this most likely doesn't apply to you)

Please look here and click on any one of the "Retail Value" links to figure out which category your car falls under:

All right deal. I don't like waiting 5k miles to change the oil on a 4 banger though.

Unless it's synthetic. then you know he/she cared about the car.
