where is the starter on a 1997 escort?

I have a manual, but it doesn't show where it is at (although it shows for pre-'97 escorts) ... I looked at autozone's online car repair section, and it doesn't show where it is either.

could someone please help me out, because the car won't do anything but make one click when I try to start it, and I need to get the starter out and tested

if you could be as specific as possible as to the location, I would definitely appreciate it

thanks

Very simple to find... locate the area where the engine meets the transmission. Follow that line where they meet toward the back/firewall side. The starter will be mounted in this area, with the head of the starter inside the transmission bellhousing so that it can spin the flywheel. It is usually easier to access from underneath due to obstructions from the intake, battery, and other hoses when looking in from the top. If you can not access from underneath, just remove the large intake hose and maybe the battery... that should give you access to at least see where the starter is.

thanks for the reply

do you know if it is best to take it out from the bottom or top?

I have always found it easiest to access from the bottom, but some people don't have the means to get the car high enough to comfortably get under there and get the job done.
Do whichever works best for you.

I got it out from the bottom -- it looked impossible to do from the top. It was missing the bolt that I would've had to take out from underneath ... I'm not sure if I'd rather hope that the starter is good or bad, but I'll get it tested tomorrow :banghead:

thanks for your help
