2001 Grand Cherokee - Factory Alarm

I recently bought a used 2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo 2WD with a factory alarm installed, but I have no instructions on how to use the alarm :banghead:

Obviously I understand the basic use of the system - lock with the doors with the remote the alarm activates, unlock the doors with the remote the alarm deactivates. Simple enough. What I have questions about is the small, red LED to the left of the steering wheel. It seems that it is also a push button for other functions of the alarm. What are these other functions? Does pushing the LED button actually do anything other than change the state of the LED (off, on or blinking)?

If anyone has a basic manual of how to use the factory alarm, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks a ton :iceslolan

I think you are talking about the status light on top of the drivers side dash.
If so, I'm very curious how you concluded it was a push button.

For starters, it's not a push button. In fact, I wouldn't be touching the LED at all - the front part of the housing holds the light sensing diode that the auto headlights use. Pushing on it should (hopefully) do nothing, it's functions are automatic; if touching it causes the light to change appearance, it may have a loose wire or the LED itself may be bad.
In no case should it stay on steadily, only blinking or off. When first armed, the light will flash quickly for a few seconds indicating its pre-arm state.

If you don't already have one, buy an owners manual.

Thanks for the reply. I took it to the nearest Jeep dealer and shockingly enough for an American car dealership, the parts guy actually helped me for a few minutes.

The LED is a push button afterall and it allows you to turn off the LED completely or have it blink even when the system isn't armed. Basically, it has no effect on the physical functionality of the alarm system, only on the aesthetics. I doubt I will ever touch it again to be honest.

He also verifed it as the OEM factory alarm just to be sure, although the LED is located on the panel directly left of the steering wheel on my model, not on top of the driver's side dash.

Thanks again

Try Ebay and see if you can locate an owners manual.

Jeep dealerships are a crap shoot. Yours could be one of the good ones since they were willing to be helpful, maybe they won't soak you for one either.

An't no such animal, at least not from the factory. If it's an oem alarm it will be on the dash, and not a button.

Well, I'm telling you what the Jeep dealership told me. I'm also telling you that when I push the LED it changes the function of it. Honestly though, I would trust the opinions of completely random forum posters before I would trust the dealership, so perhaps you are all correct.

Anyway, thank you all for your time.
